As the Rahul Gandhi-led Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra entered West Bengal on Thursday, the Assam Police have transferred the case registered against the Congress scion and others over clashes on the outskirts of Guwahati to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). This comes after the state police registered a case against the Wayanad MP and his associates over a clash between Congress workers and cops during the Assam leg of their Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra.

The decision to transfer the case to CID aims for a thorough and in-depth investigation through a Special Investigation Team (SIT) which will be constituted by the ADGP of CID Assam, Assam police chief GP Singh informed.

A case against Rahul Gandhi and other Congress leaders was registered under nine sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) based on offences related to rioting, unlawful assembly and criminal conspiracy.

Congress party workers clashed with Assam Police on Tuesday, January 23, near the Guwahati city limits during Rahul Gandhi’s Yatra after Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma-led state government barred the yatra from moving towards the key Guwahati roads, citing potential traffic disruption.

After the yatra was not allowed to enter to the key roads of Guwahati city, Rahul Gandhi accused Chief Minister Sarma of creating hurdles in the Congress’ yatra. Following this, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Wednesday even wrote to Union Home Minister Amit Shah raising concerns over Rahul’s security.

Earlier, the Congress MP has slammed Sarma and said that he is one of the most corrupt chief ministers of the country.

In response to Rahul’s statements, Chief Minister Sarma posed questions to the Congress party and questioned them regarding their motives during the Yatra.
