Splash Is No Longer Useless In 'Pokémon Sun' And 'Moon': It Might Be The Best Z-Move In The Games

Splash has long been viewed as a useless move in the Pokémon universe, and for good reason. When Splash is used, absolutely nothing happens — the move does not deal any damage, nor does it cause any status effects.

However, that is seemingly going to change for Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon, with Splash to become possibly one of the best moves in the games.

Understanding Z-Moves In Pokémon Sun And Moon

One of the new features coming to Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon are Z-moves, which are basically high-powered moves that players can only use once for every battle. There are a couple of conditions before a Z-move is launched though, and those are that a Pokémon must first learn a move in the same type as a Z-Crystal, and that it must be carrying the appropriate Z-Crystal.

Data miners who have been snooping around Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon have discovered that Z-moves can be paired with the normal moves of a Pokémon for an additional effect, and it is this function that has seemingly unlocked immense value for Splash.

Using Splash As A Z-Move

A video uploaded on Twitter revealed a Gyarados using a Z-Splash. While the move still did not have an effect upon being used, flashing the expected “but nothing happened” message, checking the stats of the Gyarados in the next turn revealed that it received a +3 attack modifier after using the Z-Splash.

Moves that modify stats typically only give a +1 or +2 boost upon being used. With the Z-move version of Splash granting a +3 boost in attack, it could very well be in the running as the best Z-move in Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon, which is a complete reversal from its previous status as a useless skill for Pokémon to have.

Over at the Pokémon subreddit, a discussion is ongoing regarding the Pokémon that can potentially abuse the powerful Z-move. The mentioned Pokémon include Gyarados, who has the highest attack among non-legendary Splash users, Poliwrath, Kingdra, Azumaril and even legendary Pokémon such as Lunalaa and Solgaleo.
