Apple Allows Fortnite’s Return on iOS After Regulatory Pressure in Europe

Apple has lifted its ban on Fortnite in the European Union, granting Epic Games the ability to reintroduce its popular game to iPhone users in the region. The change follows intense scrutiny from the European Commission, which had been investigating Apple’s practices under the recently enacted Digital Markets Act (DMA). This legislation requires major tech companies designated as “gatekeepers” to allow competing app stores and alternative payment options within their ecosystems, potentially challenging Apple’s dominance and exclusive in-app payment rules.

Epic Games’ conflict with Apple dates back to 2020, when the company attempted to bypass Apple’s 30% cut on in-app purchases by introducing its own payment system in Fortnite. This move prompted Apple to remove the game from its App Store and terminate Epic’s developer account, initiating a high-profile legal battle that drew the attention of regulators worldwide. The European Commission’s DMA, which came into effect in 2023, set a framework for competition that aligns with Epic’s position. The law compels gatekeepers like Apple to reduce monopolistic practices, including preventing restrictions on third-party payment systems.
