Siemens bags $253m Qatar power project deal

Umm-Al-Nar-qatar power projectSiemens has been awarded a contract valued at QAR 920 million ($253 million) by the Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (KAHRAMAA) for the further expansion of Qatar’s power supply system. The contract includes the construction of nine turnkey substations for Phase 11 of KAHRAMAA’s Qatar Power Transmission System Expansion project.

The utility provider’s expansion project aims to ensure stable power supply to all sectors including households, business centers, shopping malls, hospitals and schools throughout the capital city Doha and its suburbs. Under the contract.

Siemens will provide gas-insulated switchgears (GIS), with voltages including 220kV, 132kV and 66kV, for the first stage of the Phase 11 expansion. Siemens is scheduled to complete the project within 26 months from the award date.

Since 2005, Siemens has provided substations for phases V, VI, VII, IX and X of KAHRAMAA’s ambitious project to expand KAHRAMAA’s power supply system. The expansion plan is devised to meet the growing demand for electricity in Qatar, as the country continues to witness tremendous development and urbanization. As of June 2013, Siemens had close to 2,000 high-voltage GIS bays installed in Qatar.
