Meta Embarks on Ambitious 50,000 km Undersea Cable Project Connecting Five Continents

Meta Platforms has unveiled plans for Project Waterworth, an ambitious initiative to construct the world’s longest undersea internet cable. Spanning over 50,000 kilometers, this subsea network aims to link the United States, India, Brazil, South Africa, and potentially Australia, thereby enhancing global digital infrastructure and connectivity.

The project’s scale surpasses the Earth’s circumference and is designed to bolster intercontinental data capacity. Utilizing a 24-fiber pair system, Project Waterworth is set to support Meta’s expanding artificial intelligence operations and facilitate faster internet services across the connected regions. This development is particularly significant for India, where rapid digital growth necessitates robust infrastructure to sustain its burgeoning digital economy.

Meta’s investment in this multi-billion-dollar, multi-year project underscores its commitment to advancing global connectivity. The company emphasizes that over 95% of intercontinental internet traffic relies on undersea cables, which are vital for services ranging from online transactions to video streaming. By enhancing this infrastructure, Meta aims to promote economic cooperation, digital inclusion, and technological advancement in the connected regions.

The engineering challenges of laying such an extensive cable are considerable. Plans include deploying the cable at depths reaching 7,000 meters and employing advanced burial techniques in shallow waters to protect against potential hazards like ship anchors. These measures are intended to ensure the cable’s resilience and longevity, addressing concerns about the vulnerability of undersea infrastructure to physical damage and cyber threats.

In the context of global security, the integrity of undersea cables has garnered increased attention. Recent incidents have highlighted their susceptibility to sabotage, prompting initiatives to enhance their protection. Meta’s proactive approach in implementing protective measures reflects a broader industry trend towards securing critical digital infrastructure.

Financially, Meta’s substantial investment in Project Waterworth aligns with its broader strategy of expanding its technological capabilities. The company’s focus on AI development and infrastructure has been a key driver of its market performance. Despite a recent 2.8% dip in stock price, Meta’s shares have risen by 22% in 2025, outpacing other major tech firms. This growth is attributed to strong earnings and strategic investments, including the undersea cable project.
