OpenAI has announced the forthcoming release of GPT-5, which will incorporate the advanced o3 reasoning model. This integration aims to enhance the artificial intelligence’s capability to handle complex tasks by devoting additional deliberation time when addressing questions that require step-by-step logical reasoning. Notably, GPT-5 will be accessible to all ChatGPT users at no cost, providing unlimited chat access under standard intelligence settings.
CEO Sam Altman emphasized the company’s commitment to simplifying its product offerings. He acknowledged the current complexity of OpenAI’s model lineup and expressed a desire to create AI systems that “just work” for users. This move is part of a broader strategy to unify OpenAI’s various models, eliminating the need for users to select between different versions manually.
Prior to the release of GPT-5, OpenAI plans to launch GPT-4.5, internally codenamed “Orion.” This model will be the last in the series not utilizing a “chain-of-thought” reasoning process. The chain-of-thought methodology facilitates clear answers but often falls short in handling intricate tasks, such as those found in physics and mathematics.
The o3 reasoning model, initially announced in December 2024, was designed to enhance AI’s performance in complex tasks, including coding, mathematics, and science. By integrating o3 into GPT-5, OpenAI aims to provide a more robust and efficient AI experience. This integration signifies a departure from previous practices, as o3 will not be offered as a standalone model but will be embedded within GPT-5.
Altman outlined a tiered access structure for GPT-5. Free-tier ChatGPT users will receive unlimited access at a standard intelligence level, subject to abuse thresholds. Plus subscribers will have the option to run GPT-5 at a higher intelligence level, while Pro subscribers will gain access to an even more advanced version. These models are expected to incorporate features such as voice, canvas, search, and deep reasoning capabilities.
This development comes amid increased scrutiny from investors over high expenditures on AI technology, particularly after the Chinese startup DeepSeek introduced a more affordable AI model. OpenAI’s decision to integrate o3 into GPT-5 and offer it freely to users reflects a strategic response to these market dynamics.
