DUBAI // A student caught red-handed with controlled drugs in his pocket as he was trying to sell them denied the charges in court.
The 20-year-old Jordanian denied at Dubai Criminal Court possessing pregabalin, a controlled medicine used to treat epilepsy, and denied taking Tramadol.
His co-accused, a 19-year-old female student, is charged with possessing the drug for her own consumption, which she denies.
Police said they were tipped off about the Jordanian and prepared for a sting operation. An undercover police officer met with the defendant posing as a buyer.
“After contacting him, the officer agreed to meet in Al Sufouh to buy some of the medicine for Dh580,” said an Emirati police officer.
He said the suspect was arrested after he sat with the undercover officer and took the money from him. The drug was then found in his pocket.
“He had 14 tablets on him at the time of arrest,” said the officer, adding that the student’s girlfriend was waiting for him in a nearby hotel reception and was aware of what he was doing, so she was apprehended as well.
A verdict is expected on November 28.
