Changanassery family members found dead

Hyphen Digital Network |

Three members of a family were found dead at their home in Changanassery, Kottayam district, on Saturday, with police investigating whether financial difficulties contributed to the suspected suicides.

The deceased were identified as Saju Antony, 64, his wife Anu Saju, 59, and their son Savin Saju, 34, of Karingada House near SB College. The couple were found in their bedroom, while their son was discovered in a separate room near the kitchen.

Investigators are examining the family’s financial circumstances after information emerged suggesting that outstanding debts had placed them under considerable pressure. A note reportedly referring to financial liabilities was recovered from the house, although accounts of its discovery differed during the initial investigation.

Police have not established a definitive explanation for the three deaths. Their preliminary assessment points to suicide, but the circumstances, sequence of events and possible financial factors remain under examination.

Changanassery Deputy Superintendent of Police S Ashad said preliminary information and statements from relatives indicated that the family had faced substantial financial difficulties, including problems linked to their son. Investigators are looking at bank accounts and financial transactions to establish the extent and origin of the liabilities.

One account of the note indicated that it referred to a debt of approximately Rs 3 lakh and identified people to whom money was owed. The contents and significance of the document remain matters for police verification, particularly because early statements about whether a note had been found were inconsistent.

Police are also examining information that Savin had suffered financial losses through online gaming, including rummy platforms. The allegation has not been independently established, and investigators have yet to disclose verified transaction records demonstrating how much money, if any, was lost through such activity.

The family had previously operated a grocery business in Pathanamthitta. Saju later moved to Changanassery after difficulties associated with the business, while accommodation was being provided to paying guests or visitors on the upper floor of the family residence.

Investigators will need to determine whether any liabilities associated with the earlier business were outstanding at the time of the deaths and whether subsequent borrowing increased the family’s difficulties. The existence of debts alone does not establish the cause of a death, and police have not announced a final finding on motive.

The investigation is also considering information about loans reportedly obtained at interest. Police have not publicly confirmed the lenders involved, the terms of any borrowing or whether the reported liabilities were connected to the family business.

The deaths came to light on Saturday morning after relatives and neighbours became concerned when attempts to contact the household went unanswered. Family members went to the property near SB College, where the three were subsequently discovered.

Initial accounts differed over whether the entrance had been locked and who first entered the building. Police were called to the scene and began examining the house and gathering statements from people familiar with the family’s circumstances.

Saju and Anu were found together in the bedroom. Savin was found separately in an area described as a storeroom or work area adjoining the kitchen. The location of the bodies prompted investigators to examine whether the deaths occurred at different times, but no definitive chronology has been announced.

Police indicated that there were no obvious external injuries suggesting an assault. That observation formed part of their preliminary assessment and does not replace the findings of post-mortem examinations or other forensic procedures.
