'Dragon Ball Super' Just Introduced A Brand New Way To Use The Spirit Bomb

Over the past few episodes, the battle between the evil Zamasu and Goku, Vegeta and Trunks has been heating up. It seems Zamasu’s fusion with Goku Black simply made the villain too powerful for the Z fighters to overcome. But as episode 66 of Dragon Ball Super shows, the defenders of Earth have a few more tricks up their sleeves.

As was heavily teased in previews for episode 66, fans do indeed get to witness the second appearance of Vegito, the Potara Earring fusion between Goku and Vegeta first seen in the Majin Buu saga. It appears to be a huge moment, as Potara fusion in Dragon Ball Z was permanent, meaning that Goku and Vegeta essentially sacrifice themselves for the power to defeat their opponent.

That strangely isn’t the case here. The weight of the moment is diminished significantly by the reveal that Potara fusion is not, in fact, permanent, and apparently never was. Instead, the fusion only lasts a certain amount of time.

It’s a change that appears to be made just so Vegito can show up and fire off a few ki blasts before going away, and that’s exactly what happens here. But that doesn’t mean Vegito’s time on screen isn’t fun. The character, a mix of Vegeta’s arrogance and Goku’s playful “boy at heart” nature, makes for a character that is always entertaining to watch.

Many expected Vegito to be the star of the episode, but it is actually Trunks who will have the most fans talking. Trunks has always been a fan favorite, always standing out by being the only Saiyan character to bring a sword into battle. It is actually Trunks who delivers what appears to be the killing blow to Zamasu. As the hero battles to save the survivors of Earth, they begin to inadvertently channel their energy to him. It’s then that Trunks unleashes a devastating spirit bomb attack, but not in the massive ball form that we’ve seen Goku use. Instead, Trunks channels the energy into his sword, slicing Zamasu clear in two.

Is Zamasu truly defeated? It’s hard to say right now. Though he was clearly cut in half, the episode ends almost immediately afterwards. Regardless, the return of Vegito and a brand new form of the spirit bomb should make the latest episode of Dragon Ball Super one fans will be talking about for a long time to come.
