There are about 60 such light sources in the world, which have been become increasingly valuable as tools in medicine and engineering. In April, for example, scientists using X-rays from a light source at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory in California discovered new details about the structure of proteins that regulate blood pressure, raising the possibility of better treatments for hypertension. The biannual OpenStack Summit opened with Jonathan Bryce, executive director of the OpenStack Foundation, saying “We’re a inflection point … We are moving into the second generation of the cloud.” And OpenStack is leading the way. What are these generations? The first generation was built on immature technologies that required expert architects, engineers, and developers. Only large technology companies, such as eBay and Yahoo, could implement them. […]

Researchers have launched a trial for prosthetic limbs which have been designed to reach for objects automatically in a bid to make them act more like natural, organic limbs. A team of biomedical engineers from the UK’s Newcastle University, funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), said this month that a bionic hand has been developed which “sees” objects in its environment. Through the […]

Authored by James Holbrooks via TheAntiMedia.org, “It was easy enough to spot my cheerleader: She was the only person shouting in a crowd of quiet, curious, shy supporters. Her visage dug with deep wrinkles, but she was full of energy and smiles. When I saw her, I merged to the right and gave her a high-five. When I did, a group of women started to cheer me, […]

In the early 1990s, the Dubai-based Spanish craftsman Pedro de Aranda was called upon to create a sculpture of a solid-gold falcon for Sheikh Zayed, the founding President of the UAE. De Aranda rendered the piece in his Paris workshop and brought it over to Abu Dhabi. A few months later, the then president of France was gifted the bird when he visited the UAE, and it […]

(Image: file photo) A vulnerability in Intel chips that went undiscovered for almost a decade allows hackers to remotely gain full control over affected Windows PCs without needing a password. The “critical”-rated bug, disclosed by Intel last week, lies in a feature of Intel’s Active Management Technology (more commonly known as just AMT), which allows IT administrators to remotely carry out maintenance and other tasks on entire […]

Uber is once again potentially in hot water with US regulators following the disclosure of a program used to track and avoid government officials. The US Department of Justice (DoJ) has launched a criminal investigation into Uber concerning the Greyball program, software which helped drivers avoid local authorities while remaining on the road. Greyball, disclosed in March by the New York Times, was a secretive system used […]

If you travel a lot and you need to listen to livestreams, webinars and podcasts — and, of course, music — on the go, then noise-reducing or noise-isolating headphones are a boon. Noise-reducing headphones use white noise and other tricks to mask the background noise, while noise-isolating headphones are earbuds that fit so snugly into your years that the background noise doesn’t get in. That also has […]

Researchers have developed a new approach for studying piezoelectric materials using ultrafast 3-D X-ray imaging and computer modeling. Their integrated approach can help us better understand material behavior and engineer more powerful and energy-efficient technologies. (via WSJ)

The campaign team of French presidential candidate Emmanuel Macron says it has been the victim of a “massive and co-ordinated” hacking operation ahead of Sunday’s election. Around nine gigabytes of data were posted online to Pastebin, a document-sharing site that allows anonymous posting. It was not immediately clear who was responsible for releasing the files.  The documents, posted on Friday night, appeared to contain details of emails […]

Scientists have successfully completed the first outdoor field trial sanctioned by the US Environmental Protection Agency for genetically engineered algae. The researchers tested a genetically engineered strain of algae in outdoor ponds under real-world conditions. The researchers conclude that genetically engineered algae can be successfully cultivated outdoors while maintaining engineered traits, and, most importantly, without adversely impacting native algae populations. Iceland says its geothermal power station at Reykjanes can produce clean energy independent from fossil fuels by generating electricity from the heat stored inside the earth It’s named after a Nordic god and drills deep into the heart of a volcano: “Thor” is a rig that symbolises Iceland’s leading-edge efforts to produce powerful clean energy. If successful, the experimental project could produce up to 10 times more […]

Authored by Jim Quinn via The Burning Platform blog, In Part One of this article I detailed how propaganda has been utilized by the Deep State for decades to control the minds of the masses and allow those in control to reap the benefits of never ending war. In Part Two I will discuss recent events, false flags, and propaganda campaigns utilized by the Deep State to […]

NASA engineers have come up with a highly creative solution to improving the functionality and durability of materials used in space. It’s called “space fabric,” and it’s not only fashionable but also extremely versatile — soon to be an interstellar must-have. Shielding spacecraft from the harshness of deep space and protecting astronauts in their exploratory missions on alien planets has just gotten a lot easier thanks to this […]

Four of the six battery backups that sacrificed themselves to save our gear. Beep. “Honey.” [Sixty seconds go by.] Beep. “Honey.” [Another sixty seconds go by.] Beep. “Honey, something’s beeping.” And thus began what was supposed to be the end of my evening. Here’s one for your wall of weird. About 12:30am on Thursday, my wife and I finally finished up what had been a long work […]

Trump may bring jobs back to the US, but robots will get them This could be an important victory for a new president, a major capitulation by an Indian IT company or the emergence of a new model for Indian IT in the face of a rapidly shifting business landscape — or, as the case may be, all of the above. A few days ago, Indian IT […]

It’s been two years since rumors about an “Apple car” first emerged. Not surprisingly, the notoriously secretive company hasn’t divulged any details about its plans. But if a car is on the horizon, Cupertino can’t stay quiet for too long. You can hide a smartphone in a lab, but it’s difficult to not have a public presence when developing a vehicle, which requires road testing, typically in […]
