The theme so far this week at the three-day Electronic Entertainment Expo at the Los Angeles Convention Center has been video-gaming, with Sony claiming the keynote address slot. Here are nine announcements from the conference so far:
New “Doom” on the Way
Bethesda got E3 under way by showing off the latest installments of first-person shooter “Doom” and post-apocalyptic role-playing saga “Fallout 4.” The latter game will be available in November, with the new “Doom” set for spring 2016. Bethesda also unveiled the strategy card game “The Elder Scrolls: Legends,” a follow up to “Dishonored,” as well as the online role-playing game “The Elder Scrolls Online.”
Microsoft Hits the Mine
Early in the convention, Microsoft left attendees impressed with the demo of “Minecraft,” the world-building game it bought last year. The game will work with Redmond’s HoloLens augmented-reality technology, which uses holographic goggles and lets players manipulate the game by moving the head as well as with the hands and voice.
Return of Lara Croft
Square Enix announced “Lara Croft Go,” a new mobile title in a similar style as turn-based strategy game “Hitman Go.” According to the company, the new “Tomb Raider” adventure will be marked by top-grade visuals.
“The Last Guardian” Is Here
The Sony Playstation game, which concludes the trilogy of “Ico” and “Shadow of the Colossus,” has been rumored at E3 for years. Sony dropped a bombshell by announcing it with a sophisticated gameplay demo. The release date? Sometime next year.
New “Street Fighter”
Also from Sony, “Street Fighter V” continues the classic fighting game series, which has recently consisted only of expansions to “Street Fighter IV.” The new game should be arriving by next March, and an open preorder beta is coming exclusively to PlayStation 4 in July.
Ubisoft Checks In
Ubisoft surprised show-goers with the return of Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon series in the form of “Wildlands.” Also, the next iteration of “Assassin’s Creed” takes place in Industrial Revolution-era London, and is said to be especially bloody.
EA Coming with “Mass Effect”
Electronic Arts’ press conference heralded “Mass Effect: Andromeda,” along with “Need For Speed,” “Unravel,” and “Star Wars: Battlefront,” in which players can engage in 40 epic multiplayer battles.
Nintendo’s “Star Fox Zero” Coming
Nintendo started with a world premiere gameplay video for “Star Fox Zero” that will be released on Wii U in time for the holidays. Also from Nintendo, “Skylanders Superchargers” will feature Turbo Charge Donkey Kong and Hammer Slam Bowser. The company also demonstrated “The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes,” a new 3DS game set in the Zelda universe.
Whither Motion Control?
Five years after its introduction, Microsoft’s Kinect motion control device wasn’t even mentioned at Microsoft’s Xbox show. Nor did Sony talk about its PlayStation Move device. Taking their place is virtual reality, with both Microsoft and Sony promising gamers immersion in 3D worlds by way of wraparound headsets. Microsoft is using Oculus Rift with its Xbox One and PCs, while Sony has its own Project Morpheus.
