A trial parcel delivery by drone has been carried out in Abu Dhabi, with a package flown from Al Samha to the Khalifa Industrial Zone Abu Dhabi using an unmanned aerial vehicle equipped with a robotic arm. The operation, overseen by the Integrated Transport Centre and LODD Autonomous, relied on state-of-the-art navigation technology to ensure precision and efficiency.
The initiative aligns with the emirate’s strategy under the Smart and Autonomous Systems Council to lead in smart mobility and transform logistics infrastructure. The ITC controls and regulates drone operations through the Unified National Platform for Unmanned Aircraft Systems, which streamlines approval processes while ensuring adherence to safety, privacy, airspace protection and regulatory standards.
LODD Autonomous showcased alongside the drone test its hybrid VTOL aircraft named “Hili”, designed for medium-range cargo transport. It is reported able to carry up to 250 kilograms over distances of up to 300 kilometres, powered by a combination of electric motors and internal combustion engine, enabling operation without reliance on conventional airport infrastructure.
Acting Director-General of the ITC, Dr Abdulla Hamad AlGhfeli, said the drone delivery “reflects Abu Dhabi’s commitment to adopting global innovations in transport and logistics, and to using technology to raise the quality of services”. He added that ITC is keen to support pioneering efforts that build a smart and sustainable transport ecosystem and strengthen Abu Dhabi’s global standing.
Rashed Matar Al Manai, CEO of LODD Autonomous, emphasised the impact on supply chains, logistics and e-commerce: what traditionally could take days via ground transport may now be achieved in hours. He described the VTOL capability of “Hili” as a breakthrough for linking logistics hubs more efficiently across the region.
