Kuwait makes another attempt to lift FIFA, IOC sports bans

Despite similar failed attempts, two more letters were sent to the international sporting organisations yesterday requesting a lifting of Kuwait’s sports ban for six months until a new bill is approved by the Assembly, according to Head of the National Assembly’s sports and youth committee MP Saadoun Hammad.

Several organisations including The International Olympic Committee (IOC) and football governing body FIFA suspended the Gulf state last October over government interference, preventing it from participating in the 2016 Rio Olympics and qualifying for the 2018 World Cup in Moscow.

The letters, sent by Hammad, said the Assembly and the government were cooperating to introduce necessary amendments to the sports laws in order to make it compatible with international sports charters. He pledged that the IOC would be invited to take part in the making of the law, reported Kuwait Times.

Member of the committee MP Al-Humaidi Al-Subaei also proposed an initiative under which the government pledges to withdraw all cases against international sports organisations.

The proposal also suggests that the government will pledge to take back decisions on dissolving local sports federations until a court ruling takes place.

Al-Subaei said the Public Authority for Sports has advised the government against the continuation of its cases, warning that it could end up paying $1 billion to the IOC and FIFA each if it loses.
