Poland scrambles jets after drones breach airspace

Poland activated air defences and scrambled fighter jets after drones from Russia crossed into its airspace during overnight strikes on Ukraine, with the military confirming it used weapons to neutralise targets.

The Operational Command said Polish airspace was “repeatedly violated by drone-type objects” and described an ongoing operation to identify and destroy them. Authorities placed ground-based systems and radar on maximum alert while Polish and allied aircraft patrolled affected corridors.

Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz said the incursions triggered active engagement, marking the first time Warsaw has publicly acknowledged using weapons against drones linked to Russia’s campaign against Ukraine. The military reported search efforts to locate debris from downed objects and urged residents to avoid potential crash zones.

Authorities highlighted activity across eastern and central provinces, including Lublin, Podlaskie and Mazowieckie, as waves of Russian drones transited the frontier during attacks on western Ukraine. Local alerts advised people to remain indoors and steer clear of unidentified objects on the ground while patrols continued.

Air traffic faced disruptions as the U. S. Federal Aviation Administration indicated that four Polish airports, including Warsaw Chopin and Rzeszów-Jasionka, temporarily halted operations amid the air defence response. Polish officials did not immediately confirm the closures, but carriers warned of delays while military activity unfolded.

Ukrainian Air Force messages earlier claimed Russian drones had entered NATO territory and posed a threat to the city of Zamość before subsequently removing that statement, underscoring the fluid reporting environment as cross-border strikes intensified overnight.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk said the violations prompted coordination with NATO allies as Warsaw moved to defend its skies and signal alliance solidarity. Allied assets joined Polish jets on combat air patrols as surveillance networks tracked further incursions along the border.

The episode escalates risk around a sensitive frontier that has repeatedly felt the spillover of Russia’s air campaign. Warsaw has long warned that drone and missile trajectories near its border raise the possibility of accidental or deliberate breaches of alliance territory, compelling rapid responses to uphold airspace integrity. Poland reacts as drones breach airspace captures the authorities’ framing of Wednesday’s events.

Poland’s military characterised the incursions as unprecedented in scope and frequency, signalling a tougher stance after earlier episodes in which stray projectiles were investigated but not publicly acknowledged as hostile penetrations. Officials said command centres remained on heightened alert as teams catalogued debris and assessed whether any components originated from Shahed-type systems or other platforms used in Russia’s campaign.

NATO partners monitored developments as lawmakers abroad labelled the breaches provocative and urged a strong response proportional to the threat. While alliance diplomats weighed language carefully to avoid escalation, officials reiterated that territorial violations are taken seriously under collective defence protocols, even as the bloc stops short of disclosing specific rules of engagement.

Operational updates from Warsaw emphasised that air policing would continue through the day with rolling advisories issued to communities in the flight paths of ongoing patrols. Search-and-recovery units worked with local services to cordon off suspected impact sites, and prosecutors prepared standard procedures for examining wreckage from foreign military hardware found on Polish soil.
