Between Thumbtack,  Yelp Angie’s List, and Amazon, it wouldn’t appear that the world needs a new platform that matches customers with service professionals. That’s not the way that Julio Vasconcellos sees it, clearly. Vasconcellos has spent the last year-plus working on a services platform called Prefer that relies exclusively on trusted referrals, replacing the wisdom of crowds with the wisdom of one’s friends when it comes to hiring a babysitter or accountant or housekeeper. In […]

(Image: stock photo) If something seems too good to be true, it probably is. In the cybersecurity world, if something is said to be “unhackable” or provides “absolute security,” you should run for the hills, because — spoiler alert — there is no such thing as “absolute” security. Anyone who tells you otherwise is stupid enough not to know, or smart enough to try to lie. Enter […]

Abbas Beydoun is tired of excuses. The 72-year-old Lebanese author and poet urges readers and writers to avoid complacency – and to always look beyond the surface. To explain why, he highlights the central theme of his acclaimed novel, The Autumn of Innocence, which tackles the nature of tyranny. “It’s not good enough to look at violence as just something abnormal or new to us,” he says. Emma Watson plays Mae Holland, a recent college graduate who takes up the faith of the Silicon Valley digital-life media company she works for called The Circle. Holland comes to believe that omnipresent artificial intelligence embedded […]

Samsung has launched what it calls Samsung Marshmallow, a parental control app that seems to have taken cues from Android’s naming convention. Before anyone makes more out of it, Samsung Marshmallow is not a major Android update, and not everyone can exactly find it useful. But for parents and their kids, it does some wonders. Samsung Marshmallow Parental Control App What Samsung Marshmallow aims to do is to […]

President Donald Trump was a distracting entertainment from the moment he launched his campaign in June of 2015 — until he wasn’t. His opening speech, in which he called Mexican immigrants “rapists” and told the world he would be the best jobs president “God ever created,” was looked at as the ravings of a man whose outsized ego was too big to be anything but hilarious.  News […]
