A crux of an outdoor climbing route (left) vs. one using fabricated holds (right). Credit: Dartmouth College Through a combination of 3-D modeling, digital fabrication and other techniques, a Dartmouth-led research team has replicated sections of popular, outdoor rock climbing routes on an indoor climbing wall. The study demonstrates how these technologies can be used strategically to reproduce large-scale environments by considering how users interact with such […]

The biannual OpenStack Summit opened with Jonathan Bryce, executive director of the OpenStack Foundation, saying “We’re a inflection point … We are moving into the second generation of the cloud.” And OpenStack is leading the way. What are these generations? The first generation was built on immature technologies that required expert architects, engineers, and developers. Only large technology companies, such as eBay and Yahoo, could implement them. […]

Materials researchers have developed a method that could enable a breakthrough for the lithium-sulphur battery. In theory, lithium-sulphur batteries can deliver considerably more energy than today’s conventional lithium-ion batteries, but current prototypes show a distinct loss of capacity after just a few charging cycles. As a result, they are not yet fit for widespread use, for instance in electric vehicles. With their new method, the researchers were […]

Tyson Food, the largest producer of poultry in the US, lagged behind the S&P 500 on Monday after it disclosed that the office of Florida’s attorney-general is investigating potential anti-competitive behaviour in the chicken market. Researchers have launched a trial for prosthetic limbs which have been designed to reach for objects automatically in a bid to make them act more like natural, organic limbs. A team of biomedical engineers from the UK’s Newcastle University, funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), said this month that a bionic hand has been developed which “sees” objects in its environment. Through the […]
