Apple announced Friday that glass supplier Corning will receive $200 million as part of the Cupertino tech giant’s $1 billion Advanced Manufacturing Fund. The fund was announced earlier this month as a way to support “a new era of technology-driven manufacturing in the US,” and Corning is the first beneficiary. Apple said the investment will go toward Corning’s research […]

As computer chips become smaller, faster and more powerful, their insulating layers must also be much more robust — currently a limiting factor for semiconductor technology. A research team says this new phase of hafnia is an order of magnitude better at withstanding applied fields. (via WSJ)

The recently published study disproving the generally accepted notion that high-fat dairy products — such as cheese, butter and milk — are harmful to the heart has sparked a heated debate over the health benefits and disadvantages of saturated fat. The research, conducted by the Reading University in Great Britain in collaboration with Copenhagen University in Denmark and Wageningen University in the Netherlands, documents that full-fat dairy […]

The yield on Chinese five-year government bonds hit its highest since 2014 on Friday, as tight liquidity and a regulatory crackdown on leveraged investment caused a rarely seen inversion of the yield curve. Bond yields, which move inversely to price, have been on the rise since last October as the People’s Bank of China moves to discourage the use of borrowed money for bond investment.  The bond […]

Tech Times reported in February that China has increased its budget for its planned space programs and that the country is already designing an advanced and recoverable spacecraft that will be capable of landing on the moon. Now China has already begun preparations for its planned lunar laboratory in collaboration with the European Space Agency by locking in eight volunteers to live and work in a simulated space environment inside […]

In 2005, when Alan Murray was rising through the ranks at The Wall Street Journal, he ponied up for an executive education program at Stanford. The cost? Around $45,000, back then. The length of the program? A few weeks. The whole experience left him thinking these programs were ripe for disruption from a competitor who could do it better and cheaper. “Businesses spend a lot of money […]

The supercapacitor invented by researchers from UCLA and the University of Connecticut could lead to pacemakers and other implantable medical devices that last a lifetime. Credit: Islam Mosa/University of Connecticut and Maher El-Kady/UCLA Researchers from UCLA and the University of Connecticut have designed a new biofriendly energy storage system called a biological supercapacitor, which operates using charged particles, or ions, from fluids in the human body. Scientists unveiled a lightweight, robotic, outer “skeleton” Thursday that can detect when someone loses their balance, correct their gait, and prevent their fall. Designed to limit stumbles among the elderly, the device has sensors that can discern in real time when a limb starts to buckle or flail, and lightweight motors which exert instant force on both legs to restore balance. “Wearable machines that enhance your […]

KU researcher Adrian Melott examines the effects of a supernova on Earth’s biology in new research to appear in Astrophysical Journal. The KU researcher and colleagues argue the estimated distance of the supernova thought to have occurred roughly 2.6 million years ago should be cut in half. Source

The prospect is causing migraines for the people developing the robocars and is slowing their development. But experts say eventually the cars will coexist […]

Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution remains a controversial subject when related to the idea of intelligent design, but findings of a new study suggest that the English naturalist  may have been right about where life on Earth began. Water World Theory And Darwin’s Warm Little Pond Most scientists today think that the first life-forms evolved in hydrothermal vents of the sea. Otherwise known as the “water world” theory, […]
