Michael Dell at Dell EMC World Image: Asha McLean/ZDNet Although Dell EMC operates in approximately 180 countries, not all of the products and services from the company’s bag of tricks are available everywhere. When it comes to Australia, however, Michael Dell told ZDNet that Australia is pretty high up on the priority list, giving local organisations access to almost the entire Dell EMC stack ahead of many […]

For IT executives and professionals, adoption of Agile and DevOps approaches is a no-brainer — encouraging collaboration on software projects at all stages helps get projects out the door faster, with the blessings of the business. Everybody feels better about the deliverable. Photo: HubSpot However, it’s not clear how much value businesses are actually seeing out of such efforts. It’s not that DevOps and Agile are not […]

Researchers have conducted a new study that explores the attitudes and concerns of both parents and children who play with internet-connected toys. Through a series of in-depth interviews and observations, the researchers found that kids didn’t know their toys were recording their conversations, and parents generally worried about their children’s privacy when they played with the toys. Scientists unveiled a lightweight, robotic, outer “skeleton” Thursday that can detect when someone loses their balance, correct their gait, and prevent their fall. Designed to limit stumbles among the elderly, the device has sensors that can discern in real time when a limb starts to buckle or flail, and lightweight motors which exert instant force on both legs to restore balance. “Wearable machines that enhance your […]

KU researcher Adrian Melott examines the effects of a supernova on Earth’s biology in new research to appear in Astrophysical Journal. The KU researcher and colleagues argue the estimated distance of the supernova thought to have occurred roughly 2.6 million years ago should be cut in half. Source

In this Wednesday, Sept. 14, 2016, file photo, a self-driving Uber car stops at a red light on Liberty Avenue through the Bloomfield neighborhood of Pittsburgh. In just a few years, well-mannered self-driving robotaxis will share the roads with reckless, law-breaking human drivers. The prospect is causing migraines for the people developing the robocars and is slowing their development. But experts say eventually the cars will coexist […]

Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution remains a controversial subject when related to the idea of intelligent design, but findings of a new study suggest that the English naturalist  may have been right about where life on Earth began. Water World Theory And Darwin’s Warm Little Pond Most scientists today think that the first life-forms evolved in hydrothermal vents of the sea. Otherwise known as the “water world” theory, […]

The developer of an easy-to-use form of customisable ransomware has massively expanded their activities, expanding their arsenal of cybercriminal tools and making it even easier for would-be cyber crooks to set up operations. First spotted in September last year, Philadelphia ransomware is simple to deploy and at $400, is a relatively low-cost investment for entry-level cybercriminals, who also get support and updates as part of a ‘ransomware-as-a-service’ […]

Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) are small devices that convert movement into electricity, and might just be what bring us into an era of energy-harvesting clothes and implants. But could TENGs, even theoretically, give us wearable electronics powered solely by the wearer’s day-to-day body motion? The short answer is yes. New research demonstrates the ability of mechanical energy produced by typical body motions to power a watch or smartphone. […]

New research by chemist has shed new light on ice crystal formation by combining an electron backscatter with a large single crystal ice model. Scientists discovered that an ice crystal’s flat sides are formed by a hexagon that is larger and consists of a central water molecule surrounded by six others in the same layer. (via WSJ)

By Leigh Thomas and Matthias Blamont | PARIS PARIS While street demonstrations are mainly a younger person’s domain in France, when it comes to protest voting by spoiling ballots, the over 65s appear to be the most active age group. Turned off by the choices on offer in the country’s most unusual presidential election run-off in decades, the segment of voters most likely to have protested by […]

Ericsson has launched its “dynamic orchestration” solution, which the networking giant said will allow mobile telecommunications carriers to migrate to 5G and Internet of Things (IoT) applications by virtualising their networks. Ericsson’s self-professed “ambition to lead IT transformation services” led it to develop the solution, which delivers cloud-based software and professional services on demand and in real time, with the solution working across hybrid networks and multiple […]

By James Pearson and Ju-min Park | SEOUL SEOUL Like many other Americans who came to teach at the foreign-funded Pyongyang University of Science and Technology (PUST), Kim Hak Song was a Christian missionary who raised money from a church to come to North Korea. Kim had been running PUST’s experimental farm before he was detained on Saturday, travelling by train from Pyongyang to China’s border town […]

A shake-up of the overarching Israel Broadcasting Authority — widely considered an outdated and wasteful enterprise — has been decades in the making. At one point it was said to have had up to 18 unions for about 1,800 employees. Israeli officials and experts across the political spectrum said that reform was essential. Physicists have helped develop a new computer model of plasma stability in doughnut-shaped fusion machines known as tokamaks. The new model incorporates recent findings gathered from related research efforts and simplifies the physics involved so computers can process the program more quickly. The model could help scientists predict when a plasma might become unstable and then avoid the underlying conditions. (via WSJ)

Credit: University of Florida For the millions of people every year who have or need medical devices implanted, a new advancement in 3D printing technology developed at the University of Florida promises significantly quicker implantation of devices that are stronger, less expensive, more flexible and more comfortable than anything currently available. In a paper published today in the journal Science Advances, researchers lay out the process they […]

Researchers have investigated the influence of the geometry of single-molecule devices on their ability to produce electricity from heat. They fabricated devices consisting of a single molecule bridging gold electrodes and measured device electrical conductance and thermovoltage simultaneously. The devices with thiol-gold contacts displayed the highest thermovoltage when the gold-thiol bond was stretched, revealing that the thermoelectric performance of single-molecule devices can be modulated through geometry control. […]

Scientists from the UNSW in Sydney found ancient rocks in a desolate stretch in Western Australia, which could potentially aid researchers in their search for life on the Red Planet. These ancient Australian rocks — part of the Dresser Formation in Pilbara Craton — could contain possible clues to the oldest known existence of microbial life on land. The UNSW researchers discovered the fossils — believed to be […]
