Each technology rises, and then falls and finds a niche. Soon it will be the turn of the smartphone.   The arrival of the original iPhone back in 2007 heralded a revolution in how we use computing power, transforming it from something that sat on a desk in a PC that got used nine-to-five, to something that we carried in our pockets and accessed all the […]

Image: Christopher Furlong/Getty Images By Chloe Bryan, Tricia Gilbride, and Laura Vitto2017-04-23 13:09:48 UTC All dogs are good, but some dogs are the best. Using a unique and complex algorithm that we cannot disclose (just kidding, we picked 50 dogs from the American Kennel Club website, gave each a score out of 10, then argued with each other in the case of a tie), we have ranked […]

Julien Pain was tired of preaching to the choir. After spending several years debunking viral fakes for France 24’s Les Observateurs, Pain was on the lookout for a format that would expand the reach of his fact-checking. “I realized I was only reaching people who agreed with me,” says Pain. “And people who didn’t check their information wouldn’t be reading my fact-checking.” Since September, he has taken […]

By Ingrid Melander | PARIS PARIS France goes to the polls on Sunday for the first round of a bitterly fought presidential election, crucial to the future of Europe and a closely-watched test of voters’ anger with the political establishment. Nearly 47 million voters will decide, under tight security, whether to back a pro-EU centrist newcomer, a scandal-ridden veteran conservative who wants to slash public spending, a […]

Many Starbucks lovers are crazy over trying out secret menu items that allow them to experience new ways to enjoy their caffeinated and sweet beverages, and the company knows it. That is why it comes as no surprise when Starbucks’ latest craze – the Unicorn Frappuccino – is such a hit with its patrons who love to post picture-perfect photos on Instagram. Of course, not everyone shares the excitement […]

We apparently now live in an era of “alternative facts”, so it is perhaps not surprising that the alternative-history genre has been making something of a comeback in film and on television in recent years. Ben Wheatley’s film adaptation of J G Ballard’s High-Rise was a surprise indie box-office hit last year, while in X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014), Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine travelled back in time […]

The mountain-sized 2014 JO25 asteroid safely avoided Earth in its close flyby on April 19 but left behind a heap of data for researchers to analyze. Besides sparking avid discussions on how humanity would perish in a big asteroid collision, the event provided astronomers with the perfect opportunity to study the enormous space rock and gather as much information as possible on the general characteristics of asteroids. This […]

More than half of the pupils in UAE schools are classed as overweight or obese. Weight problems are even being identified in infants. Warnings such as these are becoming alarmingly common and leave little doubt that childhood obesity in the country has reached epidemic proportions. These particular findings come from a 2015 study by Mohammed bin Rashid School of Government. As well as discovering that 14 per […]

The Congressional Leadership Fund’s ad blitz has been particularly scathing, with one spot panning Ossoff for his college glee club stylings and dressing up as Star Wars’ Han Solo. The super PAC is funded in large part by GOP megadonors such as billionaire casino mogul Sheldon Adelson and his wife, Miriam Adelson; Houston Texans owner Robert McNair and fossil fuel giants Chevron and Devon Energy. So far, […]

Submitted by Jonathan Roth of RiskHedge In an exclusive video interview with RiskHedge, a long-time geopolitical expert says there is an alternate story making the rounds about the United States’ April 7 missile strike on Syria’s Shayrat Airbase in response to the Syrian regime’s alleged use of sarin gas on its own people. “Not all missiles made their target,” says Dr. Theodore Karasik, a senior advisor to […]

Data-driven analytics applications are eating the world and transforming every domain. But the world is also being eaten up in a different way by several non-sustainable practices. On Earth Day, we look at what we know about the relation between big data and the environment: how big data is used to measure sustainability and inform action, and what is the impact they have on the environment as […]

Oh, and Facebook wants you to talk and listen your skin. Luckily, we’ve kept up for you. Each week, we round up the latest app news, along with a few of our favorite new and updated products, to […]

April 22, 2017 by: Kathrin Hille in Krasnoyarsk When Kremlin officials are asked about Alexei Navalny, they like to laugh off the Russian opposition politician’s chances of challenging president Vladimir Putin. But this week the Kremlin appeared to signal that it does take Mr Navalny seriously after all. In a video published on YouTube on Wednesday, the politician who organised protests in more than 80 Russian cities […]

There were five huge boxes sitting at the loading dock of The Poynter Institute yesterday, waiting for the FedEx truck to pick them up. They are filled with more than 125 file boxes containing the literary effects of Donald M. Murray, in my opinion the most influential writing teacher America has ever known. The precious content of those boxes — including 100 of Murray’s experimental daybooks — […]

The three cases are part of a campaign by Saudi women, who have been broadcasting daring videos with their cellphones, using Facebook to organize street protests and posting Twitter messages to challenge the very idea of male supremacy in their famously patriarchal society. Continue reading the main story The campaign, started by a loose network of activists who have enlisted young, media-savvy women, has gone far beyond […]

Something has aroused the interests of the American people… perhaps one too many coincidentally ‘useful’ event means government facilitators have jumped the shark? (via Google Trends) Which is perhaps why, after discovering Project Gotham Shield, SHTFplan.com’s Mac Slavo warns, a false flag watch is now active. A general alert is out for something major in the near or immediate future. Hopefully, it is just another false alarm, […]

By Angela Moon | NEW YORK NEW YORK Social media did not take kindly to U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions referring to the country’s 50th state of Hawaii as just “an island in the Pacific.” Using the hashtag #IslandinthePacific, many on Twitter reminded Sessions that Hawaii is in fact part of the country, the birthplace of former President Barack Obama and home to Pearl Harbor. Sessions told […]

Oil producers are moving closer towards agreement on extending the Opec-led deal to limit output, Saudi Arabia’s energy minister said on Thursday, as the cartel battles excess stockpiles and a resurgent US shale industry that have weighed on prices. Khalid al-Falih said the deal could be run for another three to six months beyond the end of June. Under the terms of the existing accord, Opec members […]

About six months ago, we bought a drone to help us cover stories at the Yakima Herald-Republic, a daily newspaper in Yakima, Washington. We’d seen other people’s drone footage of fires and floods and protests, and wanted to get our own. We knew that a drone had a lot of potential to contribute to our news coverage, but we didn’t know exactly what rules apply to journalists, […]

The list of celebrities coming out as cannabis users is growing like a weed. Anne Hathaway appeared on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen on Thursday, which just so happened to be the unofficial stoner holiday 420. While on the show, Hathaway played a game called “Plead The Fifth.” The game is simple, Cohen asks her three questions, she has to answer two of them, and […]
