IBM has set out an ambitious plan to equip five million people across India with skills in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and quantum computing by 2030, deepening its long-running SkillsBuild programme and expanding partnerships with governments, universities and employers to address widening technology talent gaps.

The initiative, led by IBM, centres on scaling IBM SkillsBuild, a free digital learning platform that blends online courses, project-based learning and industry-recognised credentials. The company said the expansion will prioritise job-ready capabilities aligned with fast-evolving enterprise demand, including generative AI applications, cloud security and the foundations of quantum information science.

IBM executives framed the move as a response to structural shifts in the labour market, where automation and AI adoption are reshaping roles faster than traditional education systems can adapt. India’s large and youthful workforce, combined with rapid digitalisation across banking, healthcare, manufacturing and public services, has made skills development a policy and business imperative. Government estimates show millions of new digital roles emerging this decade even as legacy jobs are redefined.

The company plans to deepen curriculum integration with higher education institutions, vocational colleges and secondary schools, embedding SkillsBuild content into coursework while expanding teacher training so faculty can deliver updated material. IBM also intends to widen collaborations with state governments and industry bodies to tailor programmes for local employment needs, particularly in tier-two and tier-three cities where access to advanced training has lagged.

SkillsBuild offers modular pathways that range from introductory digital literacy to advanced certifications, with content developed by IBM practitioners and academic partners. Learners can earn digital badges in areas such as data analysis, AI ethics, cybersecurity fundamentals and cloud computing, alongside exposure to quantum concepts through simulations and guided labs. IBM said it will add more experiential components, including hackathons, internships and employer-linked projects, to strengthen transitions from learning to work.

Cybersecurity has been highlighted as a priority track, reflecting persistent shortages of security professionals and rising risks to critical infrastructure and enterprises. Courses will cover threat analysis, incident response and secure system design, with an emphasis on practical skills that align with global frameworks. In AI, the focus extends beyond coding to include responsible deployment, model governance and sector-specific use cases, areas that employers increasingly cite as gaps among graduates.

Quantum computing, still an emerging field, forms the third pillar of the programme. IBM operates one of the world’s largest fleets of quantum systems accessible via the cloud, and the curriculum introduces learners to quantum mechanics, algorithms and programming tools. While near-term job creation in quantum remains limited, IBM argues that early exposure will build a pipeline of talent capable of supporting research, hardware development and future commercial applications.

The scale of the target reflects IBM’s broader workforce strategy, which has shifted towards skills-based hiring and continuous learning. The company has previously said that formal degrees are no longer the sole proxy for capability, particularly in fast-moving technology domains. By expanding free access to training and credentials, IBM aims to widen participation among women, underrepresented communities and learners from non-traditional backgrounds.

Industry analysts view the plan as part of a competitive race among global technology firms to cultivate ecosystems of skilled users and developers. Cloud providers, software companies and chipmakers have all launched large-scale training commitments, seeking both social impact and long-term commercial benefits as trained professionals tend to adopt familiar platforms. For India, such programmes complement national efforts to boost digital skills and attract high-value investment, though experts caution that quality, relevance and job linkage will determine outcomes.

The Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection has ordered Kalshi, Robinhood and Crypto. com to stop offering sports-event contracts to state residents and to allow withdrawal of all funds held on their platforms. The move puts Connecticut among a growing number of states rejecting the argument that such contracts constitute federally regulated derivatives rather than gambling.

The cease-and-desist letters cite multiple violations: the trio lacked a Connecticut sports betting licence, were offering wagers to individuals under the state’s minimum age of 21, and were targeting individuals on the state’s self-exclusion list and college campuses. Regulators flagged these practices as unfair and potentially open to insider trading, given the platforms’ broader access to events with widely known outcomes. The state warned of civil or criminal action if platforms did not comply.

The action in Connecticut comes after a series of legal defeats for Kalshi in several states. In Nevada, a federal judge ruled that Kalshi is subject to state gaming laws, rejecting its claim that only the federal Commodity Futures Trading Commission has jurisdiction over its contracts. That decision freed state regulators to enforce gaming rules against the firm. Previously, regulators in Arizona, Maryland, Illinois, Montana, Ohio and New Jersey had also issued similar orders, some of which led to ongoing litigation.

In Nevada, following the judge’s ruling, Robinhood suspended new sports-event contracts effective December 1, with Crypto. com taking a similar step. Kalshi, however, opted to appeal rather than shut down — underscoring a broader conflict over whether state gambling laws or federal derivatives regulation should govern this space.

Mounting evidence from across the technology sector shows that some of the world’s largest platforms continue to struggle with code quality, raising questions about long-term sustainability as companies balance rapid feature deployment with structural reliability. The growing reliance on AI-assisted development tools and accelerated shipping cycles is fuelling technical debt across major firms, prompting calls from engineers, analysts, and former executives for a recalibration of priorities. The […]

Engineering firm ABB India has announced a 25 per cent increase in the production capacity of variable speed drives at its Peenya facility in Bengaluru. The expansion involves a newly installed production line equipped with advanced automation and sensor-based monitoring, and is aimed at boosting local manufacturing, reducing lead times and supporting domestic industry sectors such as buildings, data centres, water, cement and metal processing.

The new manufacturing line is reported to slash lead-times by up to 40 per cent while enabling more customer-specific configuration of high-power drives. According to AR Madhusudan, Business Line Manager, Drive Products at ABB India, “As we mark two decades of drives production in India, this expansion reinforces our strong commitment to advancing local production capabilities and delivering energy-efficient technologies for India’s industries.” The upgrade is said to align with the country’s wider ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ and ‘Make in India’ initiatives and reflect the Group’s deployment of Industry 4.0-style automation.

The enhanced line integrates robotics for the assembly of key components and digital monitoring tools for real-time visibility of operations, designed to boost productivity while reducing manual handling and improving safety. Tuomo Hoysniemi, Division President for Drive Products in ABB Motion, stated the move supports the firm’s global push to help industries become leaner and cleaner by localising production and strengthening ecosystem proximity to customers.

Driven market demand for energy-efficient drives has been growing rapidly, as industries seek to reduce electricity consumption and enhance operational performance. VSDs allow electric motors to adjust speed to match demand, which in turn lowers energy use and improves process control. ABB’s upgrade adds capacity for large-power-rated drives to meet higher performance needs in key industry verticals.

The decision to bolster local manufacturing forms part of ABB’s broader global strategy. The firm has previously stated it aims to achieve over 90 per cent local production in key markets including India, to mitigate supply-chain risk and respond more nimbly to demand. Outside India, ABB has increased investment in the U. S. and Europe to expand local production capacity for electrification equipment and industrial automation.

Industry analysts note that with growing pressure on carbon emissions as well as rising electricity costs, the demand for high-efficiency drives is set to rise steadily. Manufacturing localisation also delivers benefits such as reduced logistics cost, faster service and improved customisation, especially when the line can deliver “made-to-order” drives to match client specifications.

In India, the upgrade is also timed with the global celebrations by ABB of 50 years of innovation in drives and two decades of drives production in India. The move is expected to strengthen ABB India’s position among competitors in the domestic automation market, in which other firms are also investing in local ecosystem capabilities and digital manufacturing.

However, challenges remain. While localisation reduces lead times and improves responsiveness, it also requires ongoing investment in workforce skills, digital infrastructure and supply-chain resilience. The extent to which the upgraded line will translate into significantly higher market share for ABB India or broader cost advantages remains to be seen. Similarly, customer uptake may depend on the long-term savings delivered by the drives and the availability of after-sales support in the regions targeted.

For years, the cryptocurrency debate has centred on price. Every discussion returned to charts, volatility, and market speculation. The fixation on value swings has distracted from a much more important story. The future of digital finance is not about price movement. It is about infrastructure. Regulated stablecoins are emerging as the foundation of a new global financial system. They combine the trust of established currencies with the […]
