WhatsApp Rolls Out Video Calling For Android, iOS And Windows

That WhatsApp has been working on a new functionality — support for video calling — is no secret. The company has now officially confirmed that the much-awaited feature is finally being pushed out for iOS, Windows and Android.

On Monday, Nov. 14, the company confirmed the video calling feature’s arrival for the three ecosystems in a blog post. WhatsApp’s move was motivated by the fact that its users have been requesting the service to introduce video calling for a while now.

“We’re introducing this feature because we know that sometimes voice and text just aren’t enough. And we want to make these features available to everyone, not just those who can afford the most expensive new phones or live in countries with the best cellular networks,” noted WhatsApp.

While WhatsApp has introduced a slew of features in the last few months, the most awaited one is undoubtedly video calling. In early August, WhatsApp pushed out an update for both iOS and Android users, which enabled them to take advantage of the new voicemail feature.

A few weeks later, in the same month, users of the popular messaging service became excited as rumors began floating that WhatsApp would soon allow users to send videos as animated GIFs.

In September, the messaging service stirred things up a bit by introducing the Mentions for group chats feature, which allowed one to address a single user in the group chat.

WhatsApp which has been instrumental in keeping pace with rival messaging services by introducing new features intermittently, took a leaf out of Snapchat’s book and introduced a new feature this October that enabled a user to share pictures they could doodle on or add stickers in a Status. It also pushed out the Animated GIF support for iOS users earlier this month.

The arrival of the video calling feature on WhatsApp for iOS, Android and Windows will put the service in the same league with the Facebook Messenger and Line.

How To Make A Video Call ?

Once the feature becomes available and is activated, you simply have to launch WhatsApp and open a chat. Select the phone icon. You will then be offered two options in the menu – place a video or voice call. Select the video call option and you’re good to go!

Can I Swap The Cameras When Video Calling?

Yes, you can shift between the front or rear cameras when on a video call.

When Will I Get Video Calling?

Facebook-owned WhatsApp has officially confirmed that the video calling feature will be made available for iOS, Windows and Android in the “coming days.” The feature may take a while to make its way to you as it is being pushed out in phases across all the platforms around the world.
