Chinese-Backed Hackers Almost Certainly Breached Canadian Networks

A Chinese state-sponsored cyber-espionage group known as Salt Typhoon almost surely infiltrated Canadian telecommunications systems during the campaign that exfiltrated data belonging to millions of Americans. The intrusion, part of the broader Chinese-backed hackers almost certainly breached Canadian networks operation, raises alarm over the growing reach and sophistication of cross-border cyber-threats.

The FBI and Canada’s Centre for Cyber Security have attributed the breach in Canada to Salt Typhoon, which covertly embedded itself into the infrastructure of at least one telecom provider. The group modified configuration files to establish GRE tunnels, effectively siphoning off network traffic. Evidence suggests the intrusion occurred in February, forming a hidden backdoor to monitor data flows. This attack is linked to a global espionage campaign shared across high-value telecoms worldwide.

Salt Typhoon is understood to operate under China’s Ministry of State Security and has been active since at least 2023. It has targeted more than 200 entities across over 80 countries, prioritising counter-intelligence objectives. In the United States, the same group is responsible for breaches at major telecom firms, where the theft encompassed metadata, call records, and in some cases, audio recordings from high-profile individuals.

Security analysts emphasise that Salt Typhoon’s use of kernel-level rootkits like Demodex, anti-forensic tools, and exploits against network hardware showcases a remarkably advanced capability intended to evade detection and maintain persistence.

Canadian and American agencies are now collaborating to assess the damage, harden network defences, and trace the full extent of Salt Typhoon’s access. This incident underscores the urgency of reinforcing critical infrastructure cybersecurity and coordinating international responses against state-level cyber-espionage.

The campaign underscores how Chinese-backed hackers almost certainly breached Canadian networks, weaving Canada into a web of global surveillance that has primarily targeted U. S. citizens’ private communications and revealed vulnerabilities in cross-border data security channels.
