MIRI: Police have confirmed that they will bring in for questioning the TV presenter who made an insulting remark about former national sprinter Watson Nyambek’s father on his show.
Sarawak Criminal Investigation Department (CID) chief SAC Datuk Dev Kumar confirmed with theSun that the television presenter will be questioned by police in Kuala Lumpur.
This came after Watson had lodged a police report against the television programme for mocking his father.
“We have received the report and have viewed the footage of the programme that has already gone viral on social media,” said Dev Kumar.
He said that investigations into the case will be carried out under Section 504 of the Penal Code for intentional insult to provoke a breach of peace.
“We will interview the hosts and producers of the programme to wrap up investigations,” he added.
If convicted, the offender faces a maximum two-year jail term or a fine or both upon conviction.
Earlier today, Watson had lodged a police report at the Miri Central Police Station at about 9.40am accompanied by supporters and fans and some political and Dayak rights activists.
The former 100m national record holder urged the police to investigate the motive behind the presenter’s move to insult him and his father.
The TV presenter who made the joke has since come out and apologised to Watson.
Azizul Ammar Abu Hassan said that he “humbly apologises” to Watson’s family.
“I humbly apologise to Watson Nyambek’s family as I have unconsciously derided the good name of his father.
“I respect our national athlete for his successes that have elevated Malaysia’s name in the international scene,” he said in a post on his Instagram account on Sunday night.
The programme’s producers, Primeworks Studio, also issued an apology to Watson over the incident Sunday night.
