Tragic Death of 13-Year-Old in Pimicikamak Shooting

A 13-year-old boy has died following a shooting at a home in Pimicikamak Cree Nation, and a 17-year-old has been charged with manslaughter. RCMP from the Cross Lake detachment responded at about 5:40 p. m. on Saturday after reports of gunfire. The victim was transported to a local nursing station, where he was pronounced dead. The 17-year-old was arrested at the scene and a firearm seized, police confirmed.

This incident has cast a sombre mood over the Pimicikamak community, located approximately 530 km north of Winnipeg. Chief David Monias expressed deep sorrow and extended condolences through a social media post, asking for privacy and placing trust in the police to carry out a thorough investigation.

RCMP Sgt Paul Manaigre said investigators—including major crimes units—were actively conducting final interviews within the community. He described the circumstances as “unfortunate,” noting that evidence regarding what occurred was clear early on.

Sgt Manaigre added that others were present in the home at the time, though he did not elaborate. He also indicated that the case “does not appear to be a crime of passion, premeditated or intentional,” implying that the shooting may have been accidental.

Community members are grappling with grief and a profound sense of loss. The charge of manslaughter suggests the Crown has reason to believe there was no deliberate intent to kill, but that actions nonetheless resulted in the fatality.
