A 13-year-old boy has died following a shooting at a home in Pimicikamak Cree Nation, and a 17-year-old has been charged with manslaughter. RCMP from the Cross Lake detachment responded at about 5:40 p. m. on Saturday after reports of gunfire. The victim was transported to a local nursing station, where he was pronounced dead. The 17-year-old was arrested at the scene and a firearm seized, police confirmed.
This incident has cast a sombre mood over the Pimicikamak community, located approximately 530 km north of Winnipeg. Chief David Monias expressed deep sorrow and extended condolences through a social media post, asking for privacy and placing trust in the police to carry out a thorough investigation.
RCMP Sgt Paul Manaigre said investigators—including major crimes units—were actively conducting final interviews within the community. He described the circumstances as “unfortunate,” noting that evidence regarding what occurred was clear early on.
Sgt Manaigre added that others were present in the home at the time, though he did not elaborate. He also indicated that the case “does not appear to be a crime of passion, premeditated or intentional,” implying that the shooting may have been accidental.
Community members are grappling with grief and a profound sense of loss. The charge of manslaughter suggests the Crown has reason to believe there was no deliberate intent to kill, but that actions nonetheless resulted in the fatality. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to establish a complete account of the events.
The arrest and charges come amid broader scrutiny of youth and firearms-related incidents in northern Manitoba. While such tragedies have occurred in other First Nations communities, the specifics and outcomes vary. In this case, the rapid charging of a minor underscores the seriousness with which authorities are treating the matter.
The Pimicikamak Cree Nation, historically known as Cross Lake, has been confronting cycles of violence and the legacy of colonialism that have contributed to social challenges. Many northern communities face structural disadvantages, including limited access to mental health services, economic opportunity, and youth support programmes. The intersection of these long-standing systemic issues with isolated incidents of gun violence can magnify their impact, leaving communities devastated and searching for answers.
The fact that the firearm was seized at the scene will be crucial in the police reconstruction of the chain of events: how it came to be present, under whose control, and how it discharged. The involvement of major crimes investigators indicates that law enforcement is seeking a detailed reconstruction, including forensic analysis and witness accounts.
With legal proceedings now in motion, the 17-year-old remains in custody. The Crown will need to demonstrate that, even without intent, there was criminal negligence or recklessness sufficient to warrant the manslaughter charge. As this unfolds, there will likely be renewed examination of gun access, storage practices, and community safety protocols.
