ABU DHABI // A child aged 11 and a woman have contracted Mers from a relative who had the virus diagnosed last month.
The two expatriates, who live in the Eastern Region of Abu Dhabi, were found to have been infected later. The World Health Organisation reported that the woman, 46, was suffering from other disorders.
The WHO said they were relatives of one of two patients who were diagnosed with Mers in May, although it did not say which one.
One of those, a 65-year-old expatriate, died after developing symptoms on May 31 and being admitted to hospital on June 6.
The two new patients had Mers diagnosed after screening of those who had come in contact with their relative.
Neither of them had been exposed to other risk factors in the 14 days before detection, the WHO said. They are now being kept in isolation, where they have not shown any symptoms.
Across the world, the WHO has been notified of 1,350 laboratory-confirmed cases of Mers, resulting in at least 480 deaths.
The Health Authority Abu Dhabi, which is working with the WHO and Ministry of Health, has said that the Mers situation is not a public-health concern.
