Prime Minister says TN50 is not a rejection of Mahathir Mohamad’s legacy but a continuation of Vision 2020.

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Najib Razak said today that his administration’s Transformasi Nasional 2050 (TN50) was not a rejection of former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s Vision 2020.
Rather, he said, TN50 was a continuation of the former prime minister’s goals for the nation.
“I want to state that we did not reject Vision 2020. Some people think we rejected Vision 2020, but no. This is a continuous (vision),” he said during the Dewan Rakyat question-and-answer session.
Najib added that it was important for the people to feel like the new policy was from them, and for the government to consider their suggestions to create a sense of belonging.
He said the government would also continue similar dialogues with the public, including women, civil servants, academics, entrepreneurs and corporations.
He said this in response to a question by Mersing MP Abd Latiff Ahmad, who asked the prime minister to state the difference between Vision 2020 and TN50. He also asked if a working paper had been carried out so the new vision would be accepted by the people.
Another MP, Siti Zailah Mohd Yusoff (PAS-Rantau Panjang), asked if Vision 2020 had failed to create a developed nation as shown by the economic gap between the east and west coasts.
“The reality is we have not failed. We have weaknesses. If we create a vision, the vision has to be ambitious, otherwise it has no meaning.
“When we have an ambitious vision, there would be some weaknesses. There are external factors that are beyond us. For instance, global inflation or fuel hikes or drops in commodity prices,” he said.
He also told MPs to stop politicking so the government could achieve its targets for the country.
Najib had previously said the goal for TN50 “is for Malaysia to become a top 20 country in the world by 2050”.
