Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted Wednesday that he had a “warm” conversation with America’s new president, Donald Trump, Tuesday while the White House said the U.S. leader told Mr. Modi his country considers India a “true friend.”
The pair spoke on the phone Tuesday as Mr. Trump dials around the world in the first days of his new job. He has already spoken with the leaders of Egypt, Israel, Canada and Mexico, and plans to host a visit from British Prime Minister Theresa May later this week.
Mr. Modi said he invited Mr. Trump to visit India, while the White House released a statement saying that the Indian Prime Minister would visit the U.S. later in the year.
“President Trump emphasized that the United States considers India a true friend and partner in addressing challenges around the world,” the White House statement said.
“Had a warm conversation with President @realDonaldTrump late last evening,” a tweet on Mr. Modi’s account said Wednesday.
The White House said the two leaders discussed opportunities to strengthen their partnership in areas such as the economy and defense.
“President @realDonaldTrump and I agreed to work closely in the coming days to further strengthen our bilateral ties,” another tweet on Mr. Modi’s account said.
The statement said they also discussed security in South and Central Asia and resolved to stand together in the fight against terrorism.
Mr. Modi would have been listening out for any clues as to how Mr. Trump plans to relate to countries like China and Pakistan.
