Zorin OS has launched the beta version of its forthcoming Zorin OS 18, delivering a redesigned user interface, enhanced app integration, and tools aimed at easing migration for users moving away from Windows. The update introduces features intended to offer familiarity alongside modern Linux capabilities, with support lined up through April 2029 under the Ubuntu LTS foundation.
The new release includes a cleaner visual design with a floating rounded panel, lighter colour themes, and updated core applications such as Files, Settings, Calendar, Evolution Mail and a new Camera app. For productivity, the advanced window tiling manager lets users drag windows to the top of the screen to access layout options; custom layouts, smart suggestions, and keyboard shortcuts are available for more experienced users.
Cloud integration is also a major focus. Zorin OS 18 Beta adds direct OneDrive file access through the Files app via Online Accounts in Microsoft 365. Alongside this, a built-in Web Apps tool allows websites like Microsoft Office, Google Docs, Teams and Adobe Photoshop’s web version to run like native desktop apps from the menu and panel.
Under the hood the system is based on Ubuntu 24.04.3 LTS, powered by Linux kernel 6.14, which promises improved hardware compatibility, faster encryption performance, and overall smoother responsiveness. Also included are updated drivers and improved Bluetooth audio via PipeWire, as well as multi-monitor support for Zorin’s desktop layouts and menu system.
A migration-oriented feature is Zorin’s detection of over 150 Windows installer files. When a Windows installer is launched, the system suggests either native Linux or web equivalents, thereby reducing friction for users who depend on familiar Windows applications. With support for Windows 10 ending on 14 October 2025, many users will be evaluating alternatives, and Zorin OS positions itself as a viable path that does not demand new hardware in many cases.
