Apple refreshes affordable iPhone with 17e upgrade

Apple has introduced its latest budget-friendly smartphone, the iPhone 17e, delivering a meaningful upgrade to storage, performance and everyday features while keeping the entry price at $599. The new model is positioned as the most accessible way for consumers to join the current iPhone ecosystem with modern capabilities that until now were reserved for more expensive models. The phone is set to go on sale from 11 March, with pre-orders opening on 4 March across more than 70 markets globally.

The iPhone 17e marks a departure from last year’s entry-level offering by doubling the base storage to 256GB, a move that echoes broader memory pricing pressures that have pushed manufacturers to rethink value propositions. This shift puts more room for high-resolution photos and apps without immediate dependence on cloud backups. Apple’s decision to adopt 256GB as the standard aligns with trends in the smartphone market where storage tiers have been steadily increasing.

Under the hood, the device is powered by Apple’s latest A19 system-on-chip, fabricated on a 3-nanometre process, bringing faster processing speeds and improved energy efficiency compared with its predecessor. The chip features a six-core CPU and a four-core GPU, alongside a 16-core Neural Engine designed to support machine-learning features embedded in the latest iOS. This combination aims to make everyday tasks such as gaming, multitasking and 4K video editing more responsive even on a midrange model.

Connectivity receives a boost with the integration of Apple’s C1X modem, which the company says offers up to twice the cellular performance of its predecessor while consuming less energy. The 17e also includes support for 5G networks, satellite-based safety features such as Emergency SOS and Find My, and retains traditional wireless connectivity resources such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

Apple has brought back MagSafe wireless charging to this tier, enabling up to 15W magnetic charging as well as compatibility with the expanding ecosystem of magnetic accessories including wallets and cases. This addition closes a gap that existed in the previous entry model, reflecting a broader consumer preference for magnetic charging convenience. The phone also supports USB-C wired charging with fast-charge capabilities.

Imaging hardware remains a standout. The iPhone 17e sports a 48-megapixel Fusion rear camera that leverages in-sensor cropping to enable what Apple describes as “optical-quality” 2× zoom. Capable of shooting 4K Dolby Vision video at up to 60 frames per second, the camera system includes advanced portrait and night modes designed to appeal to a wide range of users from casual shooters to aspiring content creators. The front camera, integrated with Face ID technology, continues to support secure biometric authentication.

The display remains a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED panel with standard refresh rates, offering vivid colours and up to 1200 nits peak brightness. Apple has also equipped the screen with Ceramic Shield 2 protection, which the company claims delivers significantly enhanced scratch resistance and reduced glare under direct light — a refinement that boosts durability without increasing overall device size or weight.

Software-wise, the iPhone 17e ships with iOS 26, bringing deeper Apple Intelligence integration and refinements across messaging, translation and visual search functionalities. While some of the more advanced features in the broader Apple ecosystem remain exclusive to higher-end devices, the 17e’s software complements its hardware to deliver a full-featured experience for its price point.

Regional pricing reflects local market conditions: in India, Apple has priced the base 256GB model at around ₹64,900, with a higher-capacity 512GB version available for approximately ₹84,900. These figures illustrate Apple’s calibrated approach to global pricing amid fluctuating component costs and competitive pressures across handset segments.
