AL AIN // Thirteen companies have been referred to prosecutors in Al Ain for allegedly breaking labour and residency rules.
During two, three-day, inspection campaigns with Al Ain police, the Ministry of Labour arrested 24 people who were found, in most cases, to be working with an expired visa.
Thirteen women from eight firms and 11 male workers from five companies were arrested over the Eid break.
Mohsin Ali Al Nasee, director of the inspection department at the ministry, said the campaigns were held to ensure that the rights of employers and employees were being upheld.
“The first [inspection] targeted male labourers and the second was for women, and 300 establishments were inspected,” said Eisa Al Yahyaei, first inspector of the Ministry of Labour inspections department in Al Ain.
The first inspection campaign, named “safe Eid”, looked at male workers, and the second, called “safety and security”, was for females.
Mr Al Yahyaei said that the private enterprises should not hire any labourers unless they obtain a proper work permit from the ministry.
According to labour law, companies can be fined Dh50,000 by the courts for breaching residency rules and, in repeated cases, bosses could face imprisonment.
The ministry urged all companies to respect the rules and the needs of their employees.
