Dubai bans imported disposable phone chargers – Culture & Society

one time chargers

Dubai Municipality has banned the sale and circulation of one-time use phone chargers in the emirate, it announced on Wednesday.

The order was issued by Hussain Nasser Lootah, director general, Dubai Municipality, based on the technical and safety directives issued by the civic body in 2003.

It warned companies not to import or sell any disposable and non-rechargeable one-time use mobile phone chargers and to return them to the country of origin or re-export within one month from the date of issuance of the circular.

Companies that fail to follow the directive will face legal action.

Redha Salman, municipality’s director of health and safety department, said that the charges are dangerous to the environment.

“They are also increasing the quantity of electronic waste in the general waste, which constitutes an environmental burden. Besides the environmental damage, these chargers also cause financial loss to the public due to their short life,” he said.
