Saudi Arabia Soars in World Tourism Rankings

Saudi Arabia’s tourism industry has witnessed a significant surge, climbing nine spots in the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) latest Travel & Tourism Development Index (TTDI). This impressive leap marks the biggest improvement within the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, solidifying the kingdom’s position as a rising tourism powerhouse.

The WEF’s TTDI report, encompassing 119 economies, evaluates factors and policies that contribute to the sustainable and resilient development of a nation’s travel and tourism sector. This sector, in turn, plays a crucial role in a country’s overall economic growth.

Saudi Arabia’s rise in the rankings can be attributed to several key developments. The kingdom has invested heavily in bolstering its tourism infrastructure, creating a more attractive and accessible environment for visitors. This includes advancements in transportation networks, improved accommodation options, and the development of new tourist destinations.

Furthermore, Saudi Arabia has focused on strengthening its corporate environment, fostering a climate that is conducive to business growth within the tourism sector. This has involved streamlining regulations, attracting foreign investment, and fostering partnerships with international tourism companies. The presence of major business centers within the kingdom has also played a significant role in attracting tourists, many of whom combine business trips with leisure activities.

The report by the WEF highlights the positive impact of these developments on tourism within the high-income economies of the MENA region, particularly those belonging to the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). Saudi Arabia’s progress aligns with the ambitious goals outlined in Vision 2030, a comprehensive economic and social reform plan spearheaded by the Saudi Arabian government. Vision 2030 aims to diversify the kingdom’s economy and reduce its dependence on oil revenue. The tourism sector is identified as a key driver of this diversification, with the goal of attracting 100 million local and international visitors annually by 2030.

This significant rise in the WEF’s rankings is a testament to the success of Saudi Arabia’s tourism development initiatives. The kingdom’s commitment to infrastructure development, a supportive business environment, and the creation of new tourism destinations is propelling it towards becoming a major player in the global tourism landscape.
