The victim, identified as Krishna Nandu, was a student of the Institute of Human Resources Development (IHRD) College at Kalanjoor. He was travelling to college when the accident occurred on the Punalur-Muvattupuzha state highway near Konni.
Police said the motorcycle struck an elderly pedestrian attempting to cross the road. The student subsequently lost control, and the motorcycle fell beneath the car approaching from the opposite direction.
Krishna Nandu sustained severe head injuries and was rushed to a private hospital at Pathanapuram, where efforts to save him were unsuccessful.
Jayakumar, who was travelling to Pathanamthitta on official business connected with preparations for the forthcoming Sabarimala pilgrimage season, escaped without injuries.
Koodal police registered a case concerning the fatal accident and began examining the circumstances surrounding the collision. Investigators inspected CCTV footage from the area and recorded statements from eyewitnesses to establish the sequence of events.
The car carrying the devaswom board president was taken into custody and moved to Koodal police station as part of the investigation. Police also detained the driver for questioning and conducted a medical examination.
A preliminary examination indicated that the driver had not consumed alcohol, police said. Procedures were initiated to collect a blood sample for further examination.
A scientific investigation team visited the accident location to examine physical evidence and assist police in reconstructing the circumstances of the collision.
The investigation is expected to establish the precise movements of the motorcycle, pedestrian and car immediately before the accident. Police have not announced any finding assigning responsibility for the student’s death.
The elderly pedestrian sustained injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment. Initial accounts suggested that his injuries were not serious, although police confirmed that medical attention had been provided.
The accident occurred at approximately 8.55 am, according to police. Earlier accounts placed the collision around 8 am, but the subsequent police account provided the more specific timing.
Krishna Nandu, a resident of Elakolloor, was travelling along his usual route towards Kalanjoor when the collision occurred. His motorcycle reportedly struck the pedestrian before falling beneath the approaching vehicle.
The impact left the student critically injured. People at the location joined efforts to assist him before he was transported to hospital.
Police and local residents participated in rescue operations and subsequently helped restore traffic movement along the busy state highway.
Jayakumar continued his journey towards Pathanamthitta in another vehicle after the accident. He had been travelling for official engagements associated with arrangements ahead of the Sabarimala Mandalam pilgrimage season.
The Travancore Devaswom Board administers the Sabarimala temple, and preparations for the annual pilgrimage involve coordination with various government departments and local authorities.
The involvement of the board president’s official vehicle brought attention to the collision, although the available police account identifies the pedestrian crossing and the motorcycle’s subsequent loss of control as central elements of the accident.
Investigators are examining the incident as a road traffic fatality. The presence of a senior public official in one of the vehicles does not, by itself, establish responsibility for the collision.
CCTV recordings and eyewitness testimony are particularly relevant because the accident involved three separate movements: the pedestrian entering the roadway, the motorcycle striking him and the subsequent collision with the approaching car.
