DUBAI // Motorists were warned on Tuesday to be cautious on the roads this week because of poor visibility.

Strong winds will cause dust and sand to blow over open areas from Wednesday to next Monday, leading to low visibility, the National Centre for Meteorology and Seismology said.

Seas in the Arabian Gulf and Oman Sea will be rough to very rough, and a significant drop in temperature is expected starting in the Western Region and extending to the rest of the country.

The warning comes after reports that 122 traffic accidents were caused by fog on Tuesday in Dubai, Umm Al Quwain and Ras Al Khaimah.

Dense fog and below 100-meter visibility in Umm Al Quwain led to 12 accidents, which resulted in minor injuries, reported Aletihad, the Arabic-language sister paper of The National.

In Ras Al Khaimah, fog caused four accidents involving 26 cars on Al Ittihad Road, resulting in five injuries.

In Dubai, 94 accidents took place, including two serious ones, between 4am and 9am this morning.

The director of the Control and Command Department at the operations department at Dubai Police urged motorists to exercise caution on the road in early hours of the morning because of dense fog, Aletihad reported.
