Cyberattacks Surge in MENA as Tensions Rise

A recent report by cybersecurity firm StormWall paints a worrying picture for the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. DDoS attacks, a tactic used to overwhelm websites and online services with floods of traffic, have skyrocketed by a staggering 183% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2024. This surge coincides with a period of heightened geopolitical tensions, particularly the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which StormWall suggests has fueled a rise in hacktivist activity.

The report further identifies the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Saudi Arabia, and Iran as the most targeted countries within the MENA region during this timeframe. The UAE bore the brunt of these attacks, accounting for 21% of all incidents, followed by Saudi Arabia at 18% and Iran at 14%.
