Learn from the future

|By Ilyas Zameer| Learning from the past is old. It is no longer relevant in times like today. This world is volatile, unpredictable, catastrophic and yet extraordinarily amazing ( VUCA). Learning from the past can only help you if the future is going to be the same as the past, and it isn’t.

November of any year is a great time to plan for the next year. Don’t get caught by surprise on January 1st. Start getting ready now. Write down your goals and create plans of actions to make them happen. Wanting to do something with your business or life is very different from actually doing something with your life and much like the past, excuses will only hold you back.

“Those who do not study the past are doomed to repeat it.” This motto echoes through the halls of History departments, but we can’t change the past, and the future won’t be like the past in any way.

While some aspects of life move forward at tremendous speeds like technology, other parts trudge forward, and each step forward is taken with painstaking diligence like human rights. Other parts of this world are stuck in a time warp and refuse to advance like stubborn ideology.

In these changing times, if you want to succeed in your business or personal life you can’t look to the past, you need to only look to the future. The past is filled with regrets, horrors, sadness, sorrow and achievements that were only relevant at the time. Nostalgia is no way to push forward. Instead, plan for the future. Work ahead with optimism and expect the next big push toward revolutionary technology, genius inventions and new ideas you suddenly realize you can’t live without.

The past is set in stone, but the future is fluid and can be molded into any shape. Invest in yourself by investing in your future. You don’t know what lies ahead but the future is coming, and the past is gone.

2016 had problems. There were more high profile celebrity deaths than any other year, political scandals around the world, Zika virus at the Olympics, terrorist attacks and mass shootings. But don’t let a bad year ruin a lifetime. Emerge from the shadow of 2016 by making 2017 the brightest year you’ve ever experienced. Don’t look in the rearview mirror when you have a road ahead of you, stretching out as far as the eye can see and beyond.

Put on a smile and step forward. If something didn’t work for you in 2016, create a better plan to make it work in 2017.
