Prime Minister’s Belated Reaction On Manipur Developments Is Pathetic

Even his blind bhakts were getting worried. But, it’s okay. Finally, his laryngitis has spoken. Prime Minister Narendra Modi hasn’t lost his voice. And he hears the noises around him. By now even the EU Parliament must have heard the good news. Aside from the despicable one that Prime Minister Modi covered up for the horrific happenings in Manipur with his horrendously inappropriate “maunvrat”.

The horrific video of two women paraded naked in Manipur two months ago and he finally felt shame only after the entire country watched it. He expressed “pain”. Since then a few arrests have been made. Does it occur to him that the buck stopped with him and that he should have told Chief Minister Biren Singh to get his butt off the ground and act tough long ago?

Now the first arrests have been made and tomorrow the “double-engine ki sarkar” will be all over the airwaves and TV screens with cries and tweets of “Modi hai toh mumkin hai”. Disgusting. But that is how things have been for the last nearly five years. Countrymen have always found that Prime Minister Narendra Modi prefers to sign off without moving a finger! Only after it becomes plain that silence any further and the BJP election juggernaut will come to a grinding halt does he deign to open his mouth.

Surely, did the unveiling of the Opposition’s I.N.D.I.A card do the trick? Nice question. It did rattle his voice into action. Apart from the video of the “incident”, which also contributed. Suddenly Chief Minister N Biren Singh was echoing the silent Prime Minister whose roars at the election stump are the stuff of legend. Not even mass killings have brought out anger, grief, even frustration, in this Prime Minister! It wasn’t different even when he was Gujarat Chief Minister.

The signature dramatic pauses in his speeches to impress gullible voters come easy to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. His beloved Cheetahs dying one after the other did not matter. Not a word on them after their tragic end far away from their natural habitat. This otherwise voluble individual gets into a shell whenever he loses the plot. ‘What ails him?’ is a question of great import to the nation.

‘Poochta Hai Bharat!’ indeed. By evening the day after tomorrow, the Manipur molestation video will be forgotten. CJI Dhananjaya Y. Chandrachud has also found his tongue only now. The two most powerful VVIPs in the country and they aren’t deaf and dumb! It is a Christian miracle that even the Hindu Meitei will accept as godsend. Along with Chief Minister Biren Singh asking for capital punishment for the perpetrators. Standard disgusting politics.

The last time Singh stood up and spoke was when he refused to step down and give the reins of power to a better person. Like Prime Minister Narendra Modi should emulate. There is “absolutely no place for such heinous acts in our society” looks great on a tweet, but both Chief Minister Biren Singh and his “Boss” Prime Minister Narendra Modi should put in their resignations.

The Manipur Police took note of the “distressing video” and took what is being spoken of as “suo-moto cognizance”, which is neither here nor there. There is also “thorough investigation” and everything else that goes with the “thorough”. At least Home Minister Amit Shah should by now know that nothing moves in Modi rule without “Boss” Prime Minister Narendra Modi opening his zipped mouth.

Think of the number of innocent people who lost their lives – the rapes, and the gang-rapes, the homes burned, the children orphaned? In fact, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s entire Council of Ministers should stop acting deaf and dumb like their “Boss” does when it’s his time to talk and act. Don’t they know that people die when rulers take a break? That women and girls are paraded naked when the Prime Minister refuses to throw his weight behind people he was elected to protect?

Forget the Supreme Court, it has its compulsions. The esteemed justices have to attend the ‘Bharatnatayam arengetrams’ of daughters. But the Prime Minister and his Council of Ministers cannot hide behind song and dance. Promising “strict action” two months after the fact is downright criminal. People want to know the quantum of punishment for the Manipur state government, and for the Modi government, for Prime Minister Narendra Modi specifically, and for Union Home Minister Amit Shah in particular. Chief Minister Biren Singh should be made an example of.

“Using women as an instrument…simply unacceptable”, the CJI said, adding “in an area of communal strife”, which wasn’t subtle. Women should not be used as “instruments” in any setting, communal or secular. That the country is run by leaked videos of women paraded naked should trouble all of us, even the judiciary, which should have used its just hand much, much earlier. Like they say, and we all conveniently forget, “Iss Hamam Mei Sabhi Nange Hain.” I.N.D.I.A should take note and plan accordingly. ‘Bharat’ should hang its head in shame.(IPA Service)
