Samsung Galaxy S8 Specs Leak: No 3.5mm Headphone Port, New RGB Display With Embedded Optical Fingerprint Scanner And USB Type-C

Samsung is only a few months away from unveiling the Galaxy S8 to the world. The smartphone will reportedly ditch the 3.5mm headphone jack and drop its physical home button for a fingerprint scanner embedded into its new RGB Super AMOLED Quad HD display.

Apple and Samsung dominate the smartphone market and both companies have taken inspiration from each other over the years. Most recently Apple added a water-resistant feature to its new iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, a popular feature that Samsung has offered on its flagship Galaxy S series over the last few years.

Samsung has also used some plays from Apple’s iPhone playbook by launching a Pink Gold Galaxy S7 and S7 edge and is expected to release a new “Glossy Black” Galaxy S7 in order to capitalize upon the success of the Jet Black iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus.

Samsung Galaxy S8 To Drop 3.5mm Headphone Port

A new report claims that the Samsung Galaxy S8 will take cues from the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus by removing the standard 3.5mm headphone port in order to push users to using wireless audio, as well as free up space in the smartphone for more components, features and a larger battery.

Samsung Galaxy S8 To Use New RGB Quad HD Super AMOLED Display With Embedded Fingerprint Sensor?

Sources also back up previous claims of Samsung abandoning the physical home button for an optical fingerprint scanner that will be directly embedded into the screen. Samsung is reportedly planning to switch from its Diamond PenTile pixel arrangement it has used on previous handsets for an RGB Super AMOLED Quad HD display, which will produce sharper image quality.

The Diamond PenTile layout used on the Galaxy S7 Edge comes in at 7,372,800 pixels, while an RGB arrangement will produce 11,059,200 pixels on the Galaxy S8. While early rumors suggested 4K displays, it appears the company will stick with 2K Quad HD screens.

Galaxy Note 7’s USB Type-C Port To Return On Galaxy S8 Series

Samsung is also planning to ship the Galaxy S8 series with a USB Type-C port for charging and data transfer, which it first introduced on the now-recalled Galaxy Note 7. This will allow the Galaxy S8 to charge faster, provide faster data transfer speeds and be compatible with the company’s latest Gear VR headset.

Samsung is expected to launch the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus at a press event in late February 2017 to kick off Mobile World Congress. Once we hear any new Galaxy S8 details, we’ll report back.
