The knots and threads of the internet creaked under the overload of one question yesterday: “What colour is this dress?”

I don’t understand this odd dress debate and I feel like it’s a trick somehow. I’m confused and scared. PS it’s OBVIOUSLY BLUE AND BLACK

To some the answer was obviously blue and black. Others swore till the air was blue that it was white and gold. Physicists said that the answer varied according to how the original image was reproduced, the ambient light and even the age of the viewer (since corneas yellow over time).

Classics too was caught up in the debate, for the Greeks of old had no word that meant simply “blue”; hence the “wine-dark sea” of Homer.

But at its heart the sudden phenomenon of all the world talking about one little item revealed a human hunger for something to share.

No longer does half the nation, as it did in 1975, watch Michael Crawford at the Royal Variety Performance. For a moment yesterday everyone had a penny-worth to throw in, without even mentioning the weather.
