Twelve candidates withdraw from FNC election

A dozen candidates have withdrawn from the race for the next Federal National Council.

Mondau was the last day that the National Election Commission allowed any of the candidates, who now number 329, to stand down ahead of the election on October 3.

Seven of the candidates who removed their names from the running were contesting in Abu Dhabi, two each in Dubai and Fujairah, and one in Ras Al Khaimah.

Only two of the 12 candidates to withdraw were women.

The NEC also announced a two-day extension for those eligible to vote, or stand for the FNC polls, to nominate someone to register for them, until Tuesday.

Earlier this summer, Tariq Lootah, chairman of the Election Management Committee, said registration by proxy would make it easier for voters and candidates to take part.

The candidates are entitled to choose from among members of the Electoral College in the emirate they belong to.

In emirates that have more than three polling centres, candidates can nominate a maximum of three representatives.

Candidates from emirates with only three centres are limited to two representatives each, while those who are from emirates with two polling centres can request only one.

Applicants wanting to authorise a proxy for registration must issue a power of attorney authenticated by a notary.

The NEC urged all candidates to comply with campaign rules and regulations, and reminded Emiratis to find out if they were among the 204,000 eligible voters.

Names can be found on www.uaenec.ae, or by calling 600 500 005, or downloading the FNC app from Google Play or the Apple Store.
