Why Are People Dying from Alcohol Use in Pakistan? – The Short Answer

At least 34 people, mostly Christians, died in central Pakistani city of Toba Tek Singh after consuming toxic homemade liquor at a Christmas party, police said Wednesday. Dozens more remain hospitalized. This is the latest in a series of such poisonings in Pakistan in the last few years. In 2016, officials said, at least 89 Pakistanis were killed by deadly bootleg alcohol.

Why do so many alcohol-related deaths occur in Muslim-majority Pakistan, a dry country? Here’s the short answer.
