Apple Working With LG On Adding New 3D Dual-Lens Camera To Flagship iPhone 8?

Details regarding Apple’s rumored iPhone 8 have been making the rounds over the last couple of weeks. A new report claims the company is working with LG on a new 3D dual-lens camera.

Ever since Apple released the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus in 2014, the company has used more than just the larger 5.5-inch displays of its Plus models to differentiate it from its 4.7-inch siblings. The iPhone 6 Plus and iPhone 6s Plus both included OIS (optical image stabilization) for the rear cameras, while the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s omitted this feature.

OIS (Optical Image Stabilization) Added To 4.7-Inch iPhone 7

When Apple unveiled the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus in September, the company finally brought OIS (optical image stabilization) to the 4.7-inch iPhone 7 but still kept to its tradition of using the “Plus” model’s camera to differentiate its latest and greatest iPhones. This time around, Apple decided to add a dual-lens camera to the iPhone 7 Plus, which allows for enhanced features, including a blur effect that adds this effect to the background of pictures, while making the subject stand out more clearly.

2017 iPhone To Gain 3D Dual-Lens Camera?

A recent report has suggested that Apple’s 2017 iPhone lineup will include three models, a 4.7-inch iPhone 7s, 5.5-inch iPhone 7s Plus and 5.1-inch to 5.2-inch iPhone 8. The smartphones are also expected to be the first iPhones to support wireless charging out of the box. Now, a new report claims that Apple is experimenting with a new LG 3D dual-lens camera for the iPhone 8.

“Sources close to the situation said, “Apple is now studying how to apply its 3D camera technology into LG Innotek’s smartphone camera,” adding, “Since LG Innotek also has its own 3D camera and related technologies, such joint efforts will likely to bear fruit sometime within next year.”

This new report may hold some truth, considering that Apple is currently using LG as the exclusive supplier to the dual-lens camera found in the iPhone 7 Plus. It’s not clear if this means Apple will include this feature in its rumored iPhone 7s Plus, which is also expected to retain the dual-lens setup of the iPhone 7 Plus.

Apple Focusing On AR (Augmented Reality) For iPhone Camera

Apple has already confirmed that it views AR (augmented reality) as a feature it’s looking into using in its mobile devices. The company is rumored to have a dedicated team of people working on adding augmented reality to the iPhone’s stock camera app.

For now, we’ll have to file this into the rumor category but we’ll keep you posted on any new details as they become available.
