Emirates warns travellers amid storm risks

Arabian Post Staff -Dubai

Emirates has issued a travel advisory urging passengers to check flight schedules as adverse weather conditions are expected to affect parts of the UAE, raising the prospect of disruptions across air travel and airport operations.

The Dubai-based airline said customers travelling during the affected period should verify flight status before heading to the airport and allow additional time for their journeys. The alert comes as weather authorities forecast heavy rainfall, strong winds and reduced visibility in several areas, conditions that can lead to delays, diversions or temporary suspensions of flights.

Airlines operating through Dubai International Airport and other major hubs in the country typically adjust schedules during periods of unstable weather, with safety protocols prioritised over maintaining on-time performance. Emirates indicated that operational changes could occur at short notice depending on the severity of the conditions, and advised passengers to monitor updates through official channels.

Weather-related disruptions have become a growing concern for aviation in the Gulf, where infrastructure is built to handle high volumes of traffic but remains sensitive to sudden and intense storms. Heavy rainfall can overwhelm drainage systems, while strong winds and lightning increase risks during take-off and landing. Reduced visibility also affects ground handling and aircraft movement, compounding delays during peak travel periods.

The advisory highlights the broader challenge facing airlines in maintaining reliability amid increasingly unpredictable weather patterns. Aviation analysts note that while carriers in the region have invested heavily in resilience, including advanced forecasting tools and contingency planning, extreme conditions can still cause cascading delays across tightly scheduled networks.

Dubai International Airport, one of the world’s busiest for international passengers, has previously faced operational strain during periods of severe weather. Disruptions at such a major hub can ripple through global routes, affecting connecting flights and cargo operations. Emirates, as the airport’s largest operator, plays a central role in managing these challenges, often coordinating closely with airport authorities and air traffic control to minimise impact.

Passengers have been advised to update contact details in their bookings to receive real-time notifications and to consider flexible travel arrangements where possible. The airline also emphasised the importance of arriving early at the airport, as check-in and security processes may take longer during periods of disruption.

Authorities in the UAE have issued broader public guidance in response to the forecast, urging residents to exercise caution on the roads and avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rainfall. Emergency services and municipal teams have been placed on standby to respond to incidents such as flooding or traffic disruptions, reflecting a coordinated approach to managing the effects of severe weather.

The aviation sector’s response underscores the increasing integration of digital communication tools in crisis management. Airlines now rely heavily on mobile alerts, social media updates and online platforms to keep passengers informed, reducing congestion at airport counters and call centres. Emirates’ use of social media to disseminate its advisory reflects this shift towards real-time engagement with travellers.

Industry observers point to climate variability as a factor reshaping operational planning for airlines worldwide. While the Gulf region has long experienced occasional storms, the intensity and frequency of such events appear to be evolving, prompting carriers to refine risk assessment models and invest in infrastructure capable of withstanding extreme conditions.

For passengers, the advisory serves as a reminder of the importance of preparation when travelling during uncertain weather. Checking flight status, allowing additional time and staying informed through official updates can help mitigate inconvenience and ensure a smoother journey.

Airlines, meanwhile, face the ongoing task of balancing efficiency with resilience, particularly in hubs where high traffic volumes leave little margin for disruption. Emirates’ advisory reflects a cautious approach, prioritising passenger safety and operational stability as weather conditions develop.
