Hewlett-Packard offered up a slew of new laptops on Friday, including the Pavilion x2 tablet-notebook hybrid that features a magnetic hinge so it can easily transform from notebook to tent mode to stand mode. The Envy notebooks, meanwhile, promise longer battery life and a new curved profile.
“Customers want devices that are portable without sacrificing battery life or power,” said Kevin Frost, vice president and general manager, Consumer Personal Systems, HP. Frost said the company redesigned its notebook product line for 2015 with a focus on design, display, and audio quality.
Super Thin Tablet Hybrid
HP is touting the Pavilion x2 (pictured above) for its form factor, describing the new model as “super thin.” The company said the tablet is designed for both productivity and entertainment. A latchless magnetic connector allows a user to quickly attach and remove the keyboard to transition to tablet mode.
The device weighs 1.29 pounds in tablet mode, and 2.48 pounds when the keyboard is attached. It will also come with a USB Type-C connector for charging and a full-size USB connector for attaching external devices, along with a micro HDMI slot for external display devices.
The new Envy models, meanwhile, will come in 14-inch, 15.6-inch and 17.3-inch models featuring aluminum finishes and a backlit keyboard. The new laptops will also come with Bang & Olufsen audio output and a high-resolution display. The 15-inch version will also offer the option for discrete graphics. Customers also have the option to select between Nvidia GeForce 940M or GTX 950M discrete graphics, or AMD Radeon R7 or R6 graphics on the 15.6-inch notebooks.
The 17.3-inch Envy model will be geared toward power users looking for a large screen while maintaining a portable form factor. This model will also come with an Intel i7 processor and the option for a high-resolution touch display. On the two smaller models, users will be able to choose between the i5 and i7 core chips.

HP is also promising users lots of storage, up to 2 TB and options for a hybrid hard drive and solid-state-disk with up to16 GB of memory on Intel devices. The 15.6-inch AMD version, meanwhile, comes with up to 1 TB of storage and up to 8 GB of memory
The biggest development for the laptops may be the increased battery life. The 14-inch and 15.6-inch notebooks each use prismatic batteries for a thinner and lighter design with improved battery life compared to previous models. While the 14-inch model now has a 55.5 watt-hour battery, it is 3.7 millimeters slimmer than the previous version, with up to 10.25 hours of battery life at only 4.28 pounds.
The Pavilion x2 is expected to be available in the U.S. on July 21, starting at $299.99. The Envy notebooks are also expected to be available in the U.S. in July, although select configurations on the 15.6-inch and 17.3-inch models will not be available until August 30 and July 5 respectively. The 14-inch Envy starts at $699.99, while the 15.6-inch AMD and Intel Envy notebooks start at $629.99 and $799.99 respectively. The 17.3-inch Envy model starts at $999.99.
