India’s Congress Party Twitter Accounts Explode With Expletives After Being Taken Over by Hackers

The Congress party’s official Twitter account was apparently hacked Thursday morning, a day after its vice president Rahul Gandhi’s feed erupted with abusive tweets following a similar breach.

“Congress can kiss our ass” one tweet from @INCIndia read. Another promised a “full dump” of Congress emails in what it described would be a “Christmas special.”

On Wednesday night, a series of tweets from @OfficeofRG ridiculed Mr. Gandhi and his family, which has governed India for much of its post-independence history. They included mocking memes and were peppered with insults, references to the human anatomy and expletives.

“What else do I have to say? I love looting the common people yo!” one of the mildest read.

Addressing Mr. Gandhi’s 1.2 million followers, another called for a “revolution” against corruption. Graft scandals dogged the previous Congress-led government and played a big part in its ouster from power in 2014.

The other tweets, all of which were subsequently deleted, were too foul to be published.

Mr. Gandhi was a late adopter of social media. He joined Twitter in April 2015, after his party was defeated in national elections by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who used online tools extensively in his campaign.

Congress spokesman Randeep Surjewala condemned Wednesday’s hacking as “unscrupulous, unethical and roguish” and said it was the work of “venal trolls” in a tweet from his official account. In another tweet, Mr. Surjewala said it “smacks of a sinister conspiracy to abuse & intimidate.”
