Microsoft is reportedly looking to skip the second version of the HoloLens and jump straight to version three instead.
For the unfamiliar, the mixed reality HoloLens headset went on sale in March 2016 and the developer edition was priced at $3,000.
However, this HoloLens headset was only intended for developers and people have been waiting with bated breath for the consumer variant to arrive. With no news of the consumer-ready version arrival, reports are now revealing that the company is working on HoloLens V3, which will arrive in the next two years.
Microsoft Skipping HoloLens Second Iteration?
According to a report from Thurrott, which cites reliable sources, Microsoft is looking to launch a HoloLens V3 headset in 2019, which suggests that consumers may have to wait a tad longer.
The publication’s Brad Sams has revealed that several reliable sources have tipped off that Microsoft is changing its roadmap for the HoloLens. This has reportedly led to the company canceling the second version. The whole idea behind it is to speed up the process of launching HoloLens V3.
“By skipping what was version two on their roadmap, the company can accelerate version three which will be closer to a generational leap and help keep Microsoft ahead of the competition. My sources are telling me that this version of Hololens will not arrive until 2019,” he revealed.
Since mixed reality is the ultimate future of the computing system, Microsoft is trying to make its HoloLens stand up to the expectations of its fans.
“Mixed reality encompasses a wide range of experiences that previously were considered to be only augmented reality or only virtual reality. In mixed reality, people, places, and objects from your physical and virtual worlds merge together in a blended environment that becomes your canvas,” says Microsoft.
HoloLens V3: A Refined Version
The third iteration of the HoloLens headset i.e. the HoloLens V3 is expected to be a refined version of the first generation of the device.
In January, Microsoft announced that the sales of the headset were in thousands. Microsoft’s head of HoloLens Roger Walkden was not disheartened with Microsoft selling only thousands of the HoloLens headset, as he felt that it is an expensive device and not meant for the mass market.
Although the company is working on a new version, reports hint that Microsoft is continuing to invest on improving the first version of the headset in terms of its software.
The reason behind Microsoft taking such a lot of time in launching the HoloLens V3 headset is since the company intends to launch a superior quality product to the market at a faster pace. Also, Microsoft is trying to produce a device that the users would be able to use in their daily lives.
Since the developer edition of the HoloLens had multiple sensors, custom holographic units advanced optics etc. to offer its users, it is estimated that the upcoming HoloLens V3 shall have all these aspects and more.
