This is a rebellion, isn’t it? You need to be in shape to rebel. As Rogue One‘s action hero Jyn Erso, Felicity Jones — an actress formerly known for cerebral dramas like The Theory of Everything — had to up her exercise game. “This has been the most physical exercise I’ve done in my entire life,” Jones said in an extra feature in the Rogue One Digital […]
Authored by Mac Slavo via SHTFplan.com, Ultimately, no one can stop what is coming. The haves and have nots of the next, gritty era of aftermath will be those who have the means to survive when the system has failed, and those who do not. For the wealthy, and prepper minded elite, hidden fortified layers purchased for insurance will preserve most of the luxuries of life above […]
It’s a little weird to think of India and China as buddies. There has been at least a half-century of rank hostility between the two most populous nations in the world, ostensibly kicking off when India gave the Dalai Lama refuge, post the Chinese invasion of Tibet. A short but debilitating border war in 1962; claimed occupation of territories by both sides; China’s alliance with Pakistan and […]

Upwards of 60,000 people gathered and millions more watched on television the world’s richest race day, when Arrogate underline its status as the world’s highest-rated horse by scooping the US$10 million (Dh36.7m) Dubai World Cup […]

During the past few weeks, I’ve talked with my colleague Ren LaForme about two video tools: one for making videos interactive and one for shooting with your phone. We’re going to stay with easy things you can do yourself with video for a bit longer. What’s our tool this week? The first week we talked about this really cool tool to take video out of the standard […]
EVEN if it threatens to affect the legislative agenda of the 17th Congress, House Speaker Pantaleon D. Alvarez has vowed to pursue an impeachment case filed against Vice President Maria Leonor G. Robredo, justifying that, in doing so, the lower chamber is only doing its mandate under the 1987 Constitution. “Whether it will affect or not [our legislative agenda], we are mandated by the Constitution to process all […]
Schroders has become the first FTSE 100 company to publish details of its gender pay gap as pressure mounts on the financial services industry to stamp out imbalances in how much men and women earn. Schroders found that fixed pay for its female staff was 33 per cent less on average when compared to salaries for male employees at Europe’s second largest listed asset manager. It also […]
Martin Fink’s vision starts with petabyte-scale memory systems. One of the keynotes at the recently concluded Non-Volatile Memory Workshop 2017 was given by Martin Fink, a 31-year HP veteran and newly appointed CTO of Western Digital. Martin ran HP Labs, and HP’s high-end server business, and has been thinking about memory-centric computing for years. If the terms “memristor” and “polymorphic computing” ring a bell, you can thank […]
LONDON Thousands of people marched through London on Saturday to protest against Britain leaving the European Union, just four days before Prime Minister Theresa May launches the start of the formal divorce process from the bloc it joined 44 years ago. The Unite for Europe march was due to end with a rally in Parliament Square, scene of this week’s attack by British-born Islam convert Khalid Masood […]
Like an old vinyl record with a well-worn groove, the needle skipping merrily back to the same track over and over again, we repeat: Today’s markets are dangerously overpriced. Being market fundamentalists who don’t believe it’s possible to simply print prosperity out of thin air, we’ve been deeply skeptical of the financial markets ever since the central banks began their highly interventionist policies. Since 2009, they have […]
It’s very likely that many still find the idea of an unmanned retail store as something that’s a little too futuristic and unnerving. It is happening right now, though. Companies are already tackling the idea of various unique shopping experiences for their customers from drone delivery to quick home shopping. The most popular of which is Amazon Go. They, however, could find themselves in a battle with a pretty […]
Many families with airline tickets to the United States are groaning at the prospect of flying tablet-free. On March 21 the US government put an electronic travel ban in place that forces passengers travelling on direct flights from 10 destinations, including Abu Dhabi and Dubai airports to check in their laptops, e-readers, tablets and other devices with their luggage and parents are speaking out. “I am a […]
Measuring Success Three weeks later, Peggy Karas stood in the Hajjes’ living room and reached her arms out to Julia, the 9-month-old. It was six days into Month 13. Unlike many other groups, the Hajjes and their sponsors had not marked the moment with speeches or a cake; they did not seem particularly eager to note the transition. Continue reading the main story Ms. Karas carried Julia […]
Mr. Mohammad’s particular experience, however, does not fit easily into this narrative. He lives in a majority-Muslim country, has little interest in seeking asylum in the West and treads an unlikely path followed by few former jihadis. Continue reading the main story His is a story that began in a Kurdish part of northern Syria, Afrin, where he grew up in a Muslim family. Mr. Mohammad flirted […]
By Caroline Humer and Yasmeen Abutaleb | NEW YORK/WASHINGTON NEW YORK/WASHINGTON U.S. President Donald Trump said on Friday that Obamacare was “exploding” after Republican lawmakers shelved legislation that would have dismantled the healthcare law. That’s not going to happen this month. Probably not even this year. The more than 12 million people who bought 2017 health insurance plans on HealthCare.gov and other websites the law created are […]
By Rodrigo Campos and Chuck Mikolajczak | NEW YORK NEW YORK The death of the Republican healthcare reform may not prove to be the knife to the heart of the bull market some had feared, but to keep the Trump Trade alive investors should temper expectations for the breadth of expected tax cuts. Anxiety over prospects for the healthcare bill gave stocks their largest weekly drop since […]
Add Samantha Bee to the list of media thinkers with a scheme to make money in local journalism. On this week’s episode of “Full Frontal with Samantha Bee,” the “Daily Show” alumna became the latest late-night comedian to give journalism a boost. But, rather than put out a call for donations like her colleague John Oliver, Bee opted for a different strategy: lottery tickets. During the segment, […]
More than a game, Super Mario Run is also incriminating proof that Nintendo, who was once hyper adamant — adamant, still, though a little lax now — about bringing its roster of popular and beloved franchises over to smartphones, has accepted that the huge smartphone audience is a tappable market, and that it’d be dumb not to tap it. Nintendo has done so — and in a smart […]
By Steve Holland and Roberta Rampton | WASHINGTON WASHINGTON President Donald Trump said on Friday that he was disappointed that a conservative faction in the House of Representatives blocked his healthcare legislation and said “we learned a lot about loyalty” from the effort. Speaking in the Oval Office after a stunning political setback, Trump said the healthcare effort was a victim of stalwart Democratic opposition and any […]
Your Apple iCloud account may be open to attacks. Maybe the London-based hacker group — which goes by the name “Turkish Crime Family” — doesn’t have access to 250-million Apple iCloud account names and passwords. But they do have access to some indeterminate number of accounts, and that’s more than enough reason to exercise caution: Protect your iCloud password and data today or risk losing it tomorrow. […]
By Jeff Mason and Ethan Lou | WASHINGTON/CALGARY WASHINGTON/CALGARY U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration approved TransCanada Corp’s Keystone XL pipeline on Friday, cheering the oil industry and angering environmentalists even as further hurdles for the controversial project loom. The approval reverses a decision by former President Barack Obama to reject the project, but the company still needs to win financing, acquire local permits, and fend off likely […]
Shares in one of China’s largest dairy groups plunged more than 90 per cent on the Hong Kong stock exchange on Friday, knocking $4.1bn from its market capitalisation. China Huishan Dairy Holdings was granted a trading suspension after its shares saw one of the biggest drops in the exchange’s history, cutting its market capitalisation from $4.85bn to $750m and likely causing paper losses for investors including BlackRock and Vanguard. Hong Kong’s bourse […]
The Fed’s most recurring lament over the past 8 years, ever since the Financial crisis, is that there has been no measurable inflation in the US economy when using such conventional indicators as CPI, even though according to recent measurements by PriceStats real inflation, not the BLS’ seasonally-adjusted, goalseeked and politically convenient mutant, is now running at a blistering 3.6%, the highest in five years. That […]
