Facing massive data growth, productivity app Notion ditched its traditional data pipeline for a custom-built data lake leveraging Apache Spark and Hudi on AWS. This new architecture slashed data ingestion time and unlocked millions in savings, paving the way for advanced features like AI.
Notion, the popular all-in-one workspace app, has seen explosive user growth, doubling its user data every 6-12 months. This surge presented a challenge for the company’s data infrastructure. Their existing system, which relied on Postgres for both online traffic (user requests) and offline traffic (data analytics and machine learning jobs), began to strain.
To address this, Notion built a new data pipeline in 2021 using Fivetran and Snowflake. While effective for initial data warehousing, this approach came with limitations. Maintaining hundreds of Fivetran connectors proved burdensome, and the data warehouse wasn’t optimized for Notion’s update-heavy workloads, leading to slow and expensive data ingestion. Additionally, the standard SQL interface of off-the-shelf data warehouses made implementing complex data transformations difficult.
To overcome these hurdles, Notion opted for a custom data lake solution. Their new architecture utilizes Debezium for data capture from Postgres, Apache Spark for data processing and transformation, AWS S3 for data storage, and Apache Hudi for managing updates in S3. This shift offers several advantages. Firstly, it significantly reduces data ingestion time from days to mere hours or minutes. Secondly, it delivers substantial cost savings, helping Notion reinvest in product development. Finally, the new data lake empowers Notion to integrate advanced features like AI into the application.
Notably, Notion hasn’t entirely abandoned Snowflake and Fivetran. They acknowledge Snowflake’s value for insert-heavy workloads and Fivetran’s effectiveness for specific use cases. However, their custom data lake built with open-source technologies provides the flexibility and scalability needed to support Notion’s ever-growing data needs.

In a landmark decision, the Orissa High Court has ruled that women who become mothers through surrogacy are entitled to the same 180-day maternity leave benefit as biological and adoptive mothers. This judgment comes after Supriya Jena, an officer with the Odisha Finance Service (OFS), challenged the denial of her request for maternity leave following the birth of her child via surrogacy in 2020.

Justice S. K. Panigrahi, delivering the verdict, emphasized that the purpose of maternity leave extends beyond biological processes. He highlighted the crucial role a new mother plays in the initial stages of a child’s development, regardless of the path to parenthood. The court emphasized Article 21 of the Indian Constitution, which guarantees the right to life and liberty, to argue that discriminatory leave policies violate this fundamental right.

The judge cited international conventions like the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) to bolster his argument for equal treatment in employment practices. The court directed the Odisha government to revise existing leave rules to explicitly include mothers through surrogacy and ensure they receive all benefits accorded to biological mothers.

This judgment has significant implications for both surrogate mothers and commissioning parents (intending parents who utilize surrogacy). It acknowledges the emotional and physical recovery time needed by a woman who undertakes the responsibility of raising a child, irrespective of her biological connection. The ruling also promotes a more inclusive definition of motherhood, recognizing the various paths families take to build a home.

For commissioning parents, particularly women who may not be able to carry a pregnancy themselves due to medical reasons, this decision offers greater flexibility and support during the initial months of parenthood. The ability to avail maternity leave allows them to focus on bonding with their child and navigate the challenges of newborn care without workplace pressures.

However, legal experts point out that the court’s decision pertains specifically to government employees in Odisha. It remains to be seen if this ruling will set a precedent for private companies and other states to follow suit. Additionally, the judgment doesn’t address potential concerns surrounding potential exploitation of surrogate mothers within the framework of extended leave periods.

The Orissa High Court’s judgment has sparked a national conversation about surrogacy rights and the evolving definition of family. It underscores the need for comprehensive legislation that addresses the various aspects of surrogacy, including ethical considerations, medical guidelines, and the rights of all parties involved.

A recent study by LinkedIn paints a complex picture of Generation Z’s ambitions in the workforce. While a strong desire to combat climate change fuels a yearning for “green jobs, ” a significant skills gap presents a hurdle for these eco-conscious young adults.

The study revealed that nearly 60% of Gen Z professionals in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) expressed interest in pursuing environmentally focused careers within the next five years. This enthusiasm stems from a multi-pronged motivation:a genuine concern for the planet (57%), a belief in the abundance of opportunities within the green sector (51%), and the potential for competitive compensation (49%).

However, this passion is hampered by a lack of preparedness. The study found that only a mere 1 in 20 Gen Z workers possess the specific skillsets deemed crucial for tackling environmental challenges. This shortfall is compounded by a troubling lack of awareness regarding the diverse career paths available in the green sector. Just 30% of Gen Z professionals surveyed were familiar with the spectrum of green roles. This limited understanding likely contributes to the perception, held by 63%, that green job opportunities are scarce.

Furthermore, only 16% of Gen Z respondents felt they had access to adequate training programs that could equip them with the necessary skills to thrive in these coveted positions. This highlights a critical gap between the aspirations of young people and the resources available to bridge the knowledge and experience divide.

The study underscores the urgent need for targeted educational and training initiatives. Equipping Gen Z with the specialized skillsets required for green jobs presents a win-win scenario. It empowers young people to contribute meaningfully to environmental solutions while simultaneously bolstering the green workforce and accelerating the pace of sustainable development.

The findings suggest a potential solution lies in fostering collaboration between educational institutions, governments, and the private sector. Universities and colleges could develop targeted green curriculum tracks, while government grants and industry-sponsored training programs could provide financial assistance and practical learning opportunities.

By working together, stakeholders can empower Gen Z to translate their eco-anxiety into positive action, propelling them towards fulfilling careers that contribute to a greener future.
