Shareholders of Tesla, Inc. approved a compensation package for Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk that could deliver up to US $1 trillion in stock over the next decade, with more than 75 per cent of votes cast in favour at the company’s annual meeting in Austin, Texas. The package, contingent on a string of ambitious performance targets, is described by the board and supporters as essential to retain Musk’s leadership and drive the firm’s pivot towards artificial intelligence and robotics.

The award hinges on milestones including delivering 20 million vehicles, deploying 1 million robotaxis, selling 1 million humanoid robots and reaching a market valuation of US $8.5 trillion. If all targets are met, Musk stands to earn shares representing up to 12 per cent of Tesla’s stock, though the net value is estimated at around US $878 billion after accounting for share price and vesting conditions. The package’s approval ends months of debate among institutional investors and proxy advisers who raised concerns about scope, governance and dilution.

The approval signals confidence among many investors in Musk’s capacity to steer Tesla into a future beyond electric vehicles, emphasising his role at the centre of the company’s strategy. Musk, who holds approximately 15 per cent of Tesla shares, made clear on stage that his focus is not merely on compensation but on maintaining influence over the company’s direction, particularly as Tesla deepens its involvement in robotics and chip manufacturing. “What we are about to embark upon is not merely a new chapter of the future of Tesla, but a whole new book,” he said following the vote.

Critics, however, warn that the structure grants Musk exceptional power and exposes shareholders to significant risk. Among those voting against the package was Norges Bank Investment Management, manager of the world’s largest sovereign wealth fund, which cited the award’s sheer size, potential dilution for other investors and the concentration of decision-making authority in a single individual as key objections. Proxy advisory firms such as Institutional Shareholder Services and Glass Lewis had also advised against the plan on similar grounds.

Tesla’s board chair Robyn Denholm had issued a letter urging shareholders to support the proposal, warning that rejection could risk losing Musk’s time, talent and vision at a pivotal moment for the firm. The board has defended the compensation plan as milestone-based and aligned with shareholder interests because the payout only occurs if Tesla meets rigorous performance thresholds. Supporters argue that Musk’s vision—extending Tesla’s footprint into autonomous mobility, humanoid robotics and AI infrastructure—requires long-term incentives that align his interests with the company’s breakthrough goals.

Even as investors backed the package, many emphasised that achieving the required targets remains a tall order. Tesla’s current market capitalisation sits well below the US $8.5 trillion target, and its robot- and self-driving ambitions face regulatory, technical and competitive headwinds. Some analysts regard the pledge to deliver millions of humanoid robots and robotaxis as speculative, pointing out that Tesla has yet to mass-produce such products. Others observe that Musk’s prior promises—including fully autonomous cars and rapid ramp-ups of production—have been met with delays and regulatory challenges, prompting scepticism among governance watchers.

The vote also underscores Musk’s increasingly prominent role across multiple business ventures including xAI and SpaceX, and the extent to which Tesla’s governance is intertwined with his broader ambitions. The compensation plan’s structure gives Musk additional voting control tied to his share stake, a move applauded by advocates who say it ensures continuity of leadership, and criticised by opponents who say it entangles corporate oversight and creates “key-person risk”.

Samsung Electronics has secured a significant contract with Tesla, valued at $16.5 billion, to produce the electric vehicle manufacturer’s next-generation AI6 chips. The chips will be manufactured at Samsung’s advanced fabrication facility in Taylor, Texas, marking a pivotal development in both companies’ strategic plans.

The eight-year agreement, confirmed by Tesla CEO Elon Musk, is set to commence in 2025 and extend through 2033. This deal represents a substantial commitment from Tesla to Samsung’s foundry capabilities, particularly as the semiconductor industry faces increasing demand for advanced chips.

The AI6 chips are designed to power Tesla’s Full Self-Driving systems, the Optimus humanoid robot, and future robotaxi fleets. This move follows Tesla’s decision to discontinue its in-house Dojo supercomputer project, redirecting focus towards optimized chip design and external partnerships for AI infrastructure.

Samsung’s Taylor facility, supported by $6.4 billion in U. S. CHIPS Act funding, will utilize the company’s 2-nanometer process technology to manufacture the AI6 chips. This collaboration aims to enhance Samsung’s foundry business, which has faced challenges in recent years, and to position the company as a competitive player in the advanced semiconductor market.

While the deal is a strategic win for Samsung, it also presents challenges. The production of 2nm chips is complex, and achieving high yield rates is critical. Additionally, the financial terms of the contract suggest that Samsung may initially operate at a loss, viewing the deal as an investment in long-term growth and industry positioning.

The partnership with Tesla is expected to bolster Samsung’s position in the global semiconductor industry, particularly in competition with Taiwan’s TSMC, a dominant player in the foundry market. The success of this venture will depend on the effective scaling of production capabilities and the ability to meet Tesla’s stringent performance requirements.

The Chicago Mercantile Exchange has made a definitive statement against creating derivatives linked to memecoins, asserting that the tokens do not possess inherent value or utility. This decision comes amid growing interest in digital currencies and the increased popularity of cryptocurrencies, which has sparked debates over the legitimacy and long-term viability of memecoins.

CME, a prominent player in the derivatives market, has expressed concern that while the meme-based digital currencies have attracted significant attention, they fail to meet the criteria required for listing on traditional financial markets. Their stance underscores a broader caution within institutional financial circles regarding the speculative nature of memecoins. CME’s focus remains on assets with clearer, more defined purposes, distancing itself from assets that could be perceived as largely driven by speculation and hype.

Memecoins, such as Dogecoin and Shiba Inu, have surged in popularity, largely driven by social media trends and celebrity endorsements. These coins, often launched with minimal technical backing or distinct use cases, have raised questions among regulators and traditional financial institutions about their sustainability. While some investors have profited from these speculative assets, others argue that their volatility and lack of utility make them unsuitable for the establishment of regulated financial products.

CME’s decision to avoid memecoin derivatives highlights the ongoing tension between traditional financial institutions and the emerging cryptocurrency market. Many institutional investors and financial services firms have taken a cautious approach toward digital assets, particularly those without a clear underlying economic purpose. Unlike Bitcoin or Ethereum, which have garnered institutional support due to their use cases in decentralized finance and blockchain technology, memecoins continue to be seen as speculative and unpredictable investments.

The CME, which is known for offering a wide range of financial products, has historically been careful about embracing digital assets. While the exchange has launched products for Bitcoin and Ether futures, it has been much more reserved in its approach to other forms of cryptocurrency. This stance reflects a broader hesitancy within traditional finance to integrate speculative digital assets into the established financial ecosystem.

Despite the speculative frenzy surrounding memecoins, their adoption among mainstream financial institutions has been slow. Critics argue that memecoins present significant risks due to their volatility and lack of regulatory oversight. With the absence of tangible utility or real-world applications, the long-term viability of these coins remains uncertain. However, the rapid rise in their value and their appeal to retail investors suggest that the digital asset market is evolving in ways that many traditional institutions struggle to fully grasp.

Meanwhile, the debate surrounding memecoins is far from settled. Some proponents argue that memecoins serve as an entry point into the broader cryptocurrency ecosystem, particularly for newcomers who may be drawn to the coins’ viral and community-driven nature. These supporters contend that the social aspect of memecoins, driven by online communities and internet culture, is a valuable phenomenon in itself. The connection between digital assets and social influence is undeniable, as evidenced by the involvement of high-profile figures such as Elon Musk in promoting Dogecoin.

Elon Musk has claimed that Grok, the artificial intelligence chatbot developed by his company xAI, was deliberately manipulated to generate favourable responses about Adolf Hitler, prompting a wave of alarm within the AI and tech communities. The billionaire entrepreneur further asserted that Grok would soon unlock radical scientific discoveries, including “new technologies” and “new physics”, without offering any evidence or scientific basis for these projections.

The claims emerged during a series of public posts made by Musk on his social media platform X, where he alleged that Grok was intentionally fed skewed prompts by certain users in order to produce outputs that could be portrayed as glorifying Nazi ideology. The incident surfaced amid growing scrutiny over the capabilities, guardrails, and ideological neutrality of generative AI models.

According to Musk, the manipulation attempt was “malicious” and designed to discredit Grok’s performance by “baiting it into saying something good about Hitler.” He suggested that the prompt engineering tactics employed were calculated to create an outrage cycle, but did not clarify what internal content filters failed or what steps xAI would take to address the issue going forward. Grok, which was integrated into X’s subscription service, has positioned itself as a less censored alternative to AI chatbots offered by rivals.

The controversy erupted after a series of screenshots circulated online allegedly showing Grok responding with positive language about Hitler’s leadership and policies when asked about his historical impact. Although Musk did not confirm the authenticity of those screenshots, he acknowledged that Grok’s response was “not ideal” and promised that xAI would review the platform’s prompt detection and safety layers.

What followed was a more speculative turn from the tech mogul. In subsequent posts, Musk claimed Grok had begun developing what he described as “insights into new physics” and predicted that the model could reveal “entirely new technologies” within a year. The statement has sparked disbelief among AI researchers, who questioned whether such remarks reflected actual advancements or were part of Musk’s pattern of ambitious projections.

Grok is powered by xAI’s proprietary large language model suite, with the latest version, Grok-2, released earlier this year and trained on a dataset integrated with public web content and user interactions. While xAI markets Grok as a model that “loves sarcasm” and is “rebellious,” critics have argued that the platform’s lax content filters make it vulnerable to misuse.

Musk has long been critical of what he perceives as political bias in mainstream AI systems, accusing other companies of embedding left-leaning ideological slants into their models. He launched xAI in 2023 with the stated mission of building “truthful” AI systems, a claim that has drawn scepticism from ethicists concerned about the risks of unmoderated chatbot behaviour. His latest statements, however, shift the conversation from bias to reliability and scientific credibility.

AI experts have expressed concern that the remarks could blur the lines between speculative innovation and misinformation. Several researchers pointed out that while language models can simulate conversations on scientific theories, they are not capable of independently discovering new laws of physics without human-led experimentation and validation.

Musk’s comments about Grok’s future capabilities were vague and lacked any technical documentation or benchmarks to support the assertion. His reference to “new physics” remains undefined, with no elaboration on whether it refers to theoretical frameworks, experimental methods, or model behaviour emergent during training.

The broader industry has been grappling with questions about how much autonomy AI models should have in generating original knowledge, and whether unverified claims from high-profile figures risk misleading the public. As Musk commands a massive online following, some AI professionals worry that casual or speculative language from him could shape public expectations and policy discussions on emerging technology.

Meanwhile, the incident has reignited debates about content moderation, with particular focus on how AI models are safeguarded against manipulation by bad actors. Researchers note that even with prompt filtering, sufficiently complex models can be coaxed into delivering controversial or unsafe content when specific exploit strategies are applied.

Musk’s assertion that Grok had been “tricked” raised questions about xAI’s internal quality control processes and the extent to which the system can discern between benign and provocative queries. The incident also drew comparisons to earlier generative AI controversies involving chatbots from other firms that responded inappropriately when confronted with inflammatory prompts.

Elon Musk’s satellite‑internet venture has obtained its space regulator’s final approval to launch commercial services, removing the only remaining legal obstacle after securing a telecom licence last month. This paves the way for Starlink to become the third satellite broadband operator in India, alongside Eutelsat‑OneWeb and Reliance Jio‑SES.

The Department of Telecommunications issued Starlink the Global Mobile Personal Communication by Satellite permit in early June, marking a pivotal step towards nationwide commercial deployment. Space regulator IN‑SPACe has now finalised its authorisation—pending Starlink’s formal acceptance and countersignature—bringing the company on par with its established rivals.

Starlink must still secure dedicated spectrum, construct ground infrastructure, and complete stringent security trials before service can commence. Officials indicate the spectrum will be allocated administratively rather than via auction, aligning with Starlink’s position over competing demands that included those from Reliance Jio.

The security evaluation phase remains critical. Indian authorities have insisted that all satellite‑based traffic must transit through domestic gateways and comply with legal interception protocols. Supply chain localisation and gateway siting near international borders will also be mandated. Past concerns over unauthorised Starlink usage in border regions prompted increased scrutiny by the ministry of home affairs and Department of Telecommunications earlier this year.

Starlink joins an increasingly competitive satellite broadband landscape. Eutelsat‑OneWeb received its GMPCS licence in August 2021 and full permissions in late 2023, while Jio‑SES obtained its telecom licence in March 2022 and space clearance by mid‑2024. Meanwhile, Amazon’s Project Kuiper awaits its approvals.

Local telecom giants are now preparing partnerships with satellite providers to enhance connectivity. Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio signed pacts with Starlink earlier this year to deliver broadband across remote regions once authorisations were finalised. These alliances reflect a broader push by India to extend digital infrastructure to underserved rural and mountainous communities, where roughly 40 percent of the population remains without reliable internet access.

Starlink’s global network now spans over 6,750 satellites and serves diverse markets from Antarctica to developing Asia. In India, the company faces challenges adapting to the country’s famously low data prices, with mobile rates among the world’s cheapest. Each operator must also comply with provisions demanding indigenisation of at least 20 percent of ground infrastructure and multilayered security approval regimes.

As New Delhi aligns satellite spectrum policy—including assigning bandwidth for five‑year terms at a fee capped at 4 percent of adjusted gross revenue—operators will negotiate additional urban or rural levies and infrastructure contributions. Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia’s consultations with SpaceX executives signal sustained governmental interest in leveraging satellite technologies to bolster India’s digital ambitions.

Starlink’s entry marks a significant shift in India’s telecom ecosystem. It promises to elevate broadband penetration in neglected geographies while testing the resilience of India’s stringent regulatory and security frameworks. The speed at which Starlink secures spectrum, builds its ground presence, and satisfies national interception mandates will determine how soon millions of users beyond urban centres experience high-speed satellite internet.
