Coal India Ltd cut coal production in May by 11.6 per cent year-on-year to 56.13 million tonnes, underscoring a shift in the country’s energy market as high inventories, uneven industrial demand and rising non-fossil capacity alter the operating rhythm of the world’s largest coal miner.

The May figure, based on provisional operational data for the month ended 31 May, came against a monthly target of 66.28 million tonnes. Coal offtake, the volume supplied to power utilities and other customers, rose 2.26 per cent to 66.18 million tonnes, showing that dispatches continued to outpace production as the company worked down inventories rather than pushing output at full pace.

The fall marks the second straight month of reduced production after April output dropped 9.7 per cent to 56.1 million tonnes. The pattern points to a deliberate balancing act by Coal India, which remains central to electricity security but is also facing the consequences of heavy stock accumulation at mines and the growing role of solar, wind, hydro and nuclear generation in meeting demand.

Coal India, through its subsidiaries, accounts for about four-fifths of domestic coal output. Its production in the first two months of the 2026-27 financial year stood at 112.19 million tonnes, below the target of 127.85 million tonnes. The company’s annual production target for the year is 815 million tonnes, a demanding goal at a time when the power market is becoming more seasonal and less dependent on continuous coal expansion.

Demand for coal has not collapsed. Peak electricity demand touched a record level of about 270.8 gigawatts in May as a severe heatwave lifted cooling needs across several regions. Coal-fired plants remain the backbone of the grid, generating more than 70 per cent of electricity despite the rapid expansion of non-fossil capacity. Yet the pressure on Coal India is no longer simply to mine more. It is to supply coal to the right locations at the right time while avoiding excessive stock build-up at pitheads.

Inventories have become a key concern. Coal stocks across the system stood at about 168 million tonnes in late May, including 47.6 million tonnes at power plants and 113.5 million tonnes at Coal India mine-heads. The company has said those reserves are enough for 19 days of consumption. Mine-head stocks were about 10 per cent higher than a year earlier, creating operational and financial incentives to moderate production while dispatches catch up.

The May subsidiary-wise data showed a mixed picture. Mahanadi Coalfields produced 14.26 million tonnes, about 20.1 per cent lower than a year earlier, while Northern Coalfields fell 23.69 per cent to 9.47 million tonnes. Bharat Coking Coal declined 25.51 per cent to 2.28 million tonnes. Western Coalfields dropped 8.4 per cent and Eastern Coalfields was down 3.63 per cent. South Eastern Coalfields was the exception, increasing output 4.53 per cent to 14.42 million tonnes, while Central Coalfields edged up 0.44 per cent to 6.2 million tonnes.

The company’s offtake profile was more resilient. Mahanadi Coalfields dispatched 18.34 million tonnes in May, up 5.77 per cent, while Central Coalfields rose 17.45 per cent and Eastern Coalfields gained 6.48 per cent. South Eastern Coalfields increased dispatches by 3.18 per cent. The weaker areas included Bharat Coking Coal, where offtake fell 16.16 per cent, and Northern Coalfields, down 8.44 per cent.

The wider power sector is changing quickly. Non-fossil fuel capacity reached 283.46 gigawatts by the end of March, including 150.26 gigawatts of solar, 56.09 gigawatts of wind, 51.41 gigawatts of large hydro and 8.78 gigawatts of nuclear power. Renewable energy additions in 2025-26 were driven mainly by solar, which has become a significant contributor during daylight peaks. Even so, the grid still leans heavily on coal after sunset and during periods when renewable output weakens.

That split has created a more complex operating environment. Coal India is being asked to ensure reliability during heatwaves, support power plants with low stocks and maintain supplies to non-power consumers, while policymakers are also pushing cleaner energy, storage and transmission upgrades. The result is a coal market where peak demand can be exceptionally strong even as average growth in coal consumption becomes less predictable.

Mr. Edwin R. Bautista, President and Chief Executive Officer of Philippine National Bank (third from left); Ms. Thuy Vu Dropsey, Chief Corporate Development & Strategic Finance Officer at Vingroup (third from right); and Mr. Dao Quy Phi, Managing Director of Green SM Southeast Asia (far right), together with representatives of the parties at the partnership signing ceremony between Green GSM and Philippine National Bank. Under the partnership, PNB provided a PHP 2 billion credit facility to support Green GSM’s operational expansion and fleet growth in the Philippines. The facility supported Green GSM’s fleet expansion and operating capacity in the Philippines.

Alongside the credit facility, the two parties also implemented digital account management and payment systems for Green GSM’s driver network. Through PNB’s corporate banking platform and digitized onboarding processes, account opening and activation times are significantly reduced, helping Green GSM strengthen operational management as it expands driver network.

As cities continue to seek lower-emission transport solutions, financial systems, digital payments, driver management and operating standards are becoming increasingly important to supporting mobility platforms at scale.

In the Philippines, Green GSM is building mobility model through the integration of technology, an all-electric fleet, and standardized operating systems. Following its strategic partnership with Xentro Group in 2025 and the launch of the Green Xentro fleet in Rizal earlier this year, the company continues to expand its presence through long-term collaborations with local partners and domestic financial institutions.

“We appreciate Green GSM’s long-term development direction in the Philippines, not only in advancing low-emission mobility, but also in the way the company is building an operating model with scalability and clear governance foundations,” said Mr. Edwin R. Bautista, President and Chief Executive Officer of PNB. “The transition toward sustainable transport will require ecosystems capable of supporting stable long-term growth, together with the financial and operational foundations needed to enable that expansion.”

Ms. Le Thi Thu Trang, Chief Executive Officer of Green GSM Philippines, said: “For Green GSM, developing an all-electric mobility model is not only about expanding the fleet, but also about building an operating system that is stable, standardized, and capable of sustainable long-term growth. Our partnership with PNB will help strengthen the financial and operational foundations needed to enhance service quality and support Green GSM’s continued expansion in the Philippines.”

Green GSM develops its all-electric mobility model through the combination of technology, standardized operating systems, and professionally trained drivers. The platform is supported by real-time monitoring and operational systems designed to maintain service consistency across major urban areas.

The partnership with PNB further reinforces Green GSM’s long-term direction in the Philippines, where the company continues to strengthen its operating foundations, service standards, and driver support systems in order to maintain service quality as operations scale further.

SoftBank Group has overtaken Toyota Motor as Japan’s most valuable company, underlining a sharp shift in investor preference from the country’s traditional manufacturing champions towards businesses seen as central to the global artificial intelligence build-out.

Shares in Masayoshi Son’s technology investment group surged in Tokyo trading, lifting its market value to about ¥47.2 trillion, or roughly $296 billion, ahead of Toyota’s ¥45.7 trillion after the carmaker’s stock fell nearly 5 per cent. The move placed SoftBank at the top of Japan’s corporate valuation table for the first time in more than two decades and added momentum to a Nikkei 225 rally that pushed the index above 67,000.

The change is more than a stock-market milestone. It reflects how the AI boom has reshaped capital allocation in Japan, where investors are assigning higher value to companies with exposure to semiconductors, data centres, power infrastructure and generative AI platforms. Toyota remains one of the world’s largest and most profitable carmakers, but its valuation is now being weighed against a slower earnings outlook, tariff pressure, currency swings and the heavy cost of electrification.

SoftBank’s advance has been driven by a powerful combination of portfolio gains and expectations that its AI-linked holdings could generate fresh liquidity. The group’s exposure to Arm, the British chip-design company it took public in 2023, has become a key pillar of its market value. Arm’s technology is used widely across smartphones, cloud computing and increasingly AI-related chips, giving SoftBank a central position in the semiconductor supply chain.

OpenAI has become the second major driver of investor attention. SoftBank has committed tens of billions of dollars to the ChatGPT developer and is positioning itself as a core financier of AI infrastructure. Expectations that OpenAI could move towards a public listing have intensified interest in SoftBank’s asset base, even as analysts continue to debate how much of the group’s valuation depends on private-market pricing and future monetisation.

The latest surge followed SoftBank’s plan to invest up to €75 billion in AI infrastructure in France, including data centres and power-intensive computing capacity. The first phase is expected to involve about €45 billion of investment to build 3.1 gigawatts of capacity by 2031, with further expansion potentially taking the total to 5 gigawatts. The project places France at the centre of Europe’s push to develop sovereign AI infrastructure, helped by its nuclear-heavy power system and available industrial sites.

SoftBank is also moving to create public-market vehicles around AI infrastructure. SB Energy, its power and data-centre platform, is preparing for a potential US listing and has been linked to a valuation above $50 billion. The company is involved in large-scale power projects designed to support AI workloads, including a 1.2-gigawatt data-centre development in Texas. A separate robotics venture, Roze, is also being prepared for a possible listing, highlighting SoftBank’s attempt to build an ecosystem around energy, construction automation and computing capacity.

Toyota’s fall in ranking does not signal operational weakness. The carmaker reported operating income of ¥3.8 trillion for the financial year ended March 2026, supported by vehicle sales and pricing power despite tariff costs and rising expenses. It remains a global force in hybrid technology, production efficiency and supply-chain management. However, investors have become more cautious about its growth outlook as the auto sector faces higher regulatory costs, slower battery-electric vehicle adoption in some markets, and intensifying competition from China-based manufacturers.

The contrast between SoftBank and Toyota captures a broader reordering of Japan’s equity market. AI-linked names, chip suppliers and infrastructure companies are drawing strong inflows, while parts of the auto sector and older industrial groups face questions over margin durability. Kioxia, the memory-chip maker, has also climbed sharply this year, showing how investor enthusiasm has spread beyond SoftBank into companies tied to storage and high-performance computing.

The rally has strengthened the profile of Son, whose investment record has swung between spectacular gains and painful losses. SoftBank’s Vision Fund suffered heavy write-downs after the collapse in technology valuations in 2021 and 2022, while earlier bets such as WeWork damaged confidence in the group’s risk controls. Its comeback has been powered by a more concentrated AI narrative, but that also leaves the shares vulnerable if expectations around OpenAI, Arm or infrastructure listings are revised lower.

Malaysia began enforcing new online safety rules on Monday that bar children younger than 16 from owning social media accounts, placing responsibility on major platforms to verify users’ ages and block underage account registration.

The measures apply to online platforms with at least 8 million users in Malaysia, bringing Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube within the scope of the rules. Companies must introduce age-verification systems for new users and checks for existing account holders, while strengthening safeguards against harmful content, cyberbullying, grooming, scams, child sexual abuse material and other online risks identified by regulators.

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission has framed the move as a child-protection measure rather than a general restriction on internet access. Children under 16 are not being cut off from the internet, but they are no longer permitted to own private social media accounts in their own names. Parents will not face penalties if children bypass the rules, but platforms that fail to comply can face fines of up to 10 million ringgit.

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil had signalled the age floor last year, arguing that children were being exposed to online harms at a scale that demanded firmer platform accountability. He has said the policy is aimed at stopping under-16s from opening accounts independently, while allowing supervised access under parental control. Officials have also pointed to the spread of scams, online gambling, predatory contact and bullying as risks that existing moderation systems have failed to contain.

The enforcement places Malaysia among a growing group of governments testing age-based restrictions on social media. Australia has moved ahead with a comparable under-16 model, while the United Kingdom and several European governments are examining tougher obligations on platforms, age checks and design features that can encourage prolonged use by minors. Indonesia and Turkey have also discussed stronger limits for children’s access to social platforms.

Malaysia’s approach marks a significant shift in Southeast Asia’s digital regulation, where governments have increasingly moved from voluntary platform pledges to statutory obligations. The country has already required large social media and messaging platforms to obtain operating licences, with authorities saying the regime is intended to combat cybercrime, harmful content and misuse of online services. The under-16 rule adds a more targeted child-safety layer to that broader regulatory framework.

The most difficult part of implementation is likely to be age verification. Platforms may need to rely on identity documents, digital identity systems, facial estimation technology, parental confirmation or other mechanisms. Each option raises trade-offs. Stronger verification can reduce false age declarations, but it can also require users to hand over sensitive personal data. Privacy advocates have warned that age checks could create wider data-collection risks unless platforms limit retention, secure information properly and avoid using identity data for advertising or profiling.

Child-rights and free-expression groups have also questioned whether a blanket age rule will protect vulnerable users or push them towards less visible online spaces. Critics argue that determined teenagers may use virtual private networks, borrowed accounts, false birth dates or overseas registration routes to evade the restriction. They say a safer approach would combine age-appropriate design, stronger default privacy settings, rapid removal of harmful content, limits on addictive features and meaningful complaint channels.

Supporters of the policy counter that age limits give parents a clearer standard and force platforms to accept responsibility for systems that have often treated children as ordinary users. They argue that voluntary parental controls have not kept pace with algorithmic recommendation systems, private messaging risks and the commercial incentives behind engagement-driven platforms. The new rules are expected to test whether large technology companies can apply credible safeguards without excluding legitimate educational, civic and social uses of digital services.

FOSHAN, CHINA – Media OutReach Newswire – 31 May 2026 – As global travelers seek more diverse destinations, China has emerged as a top choice. In the first quarter of 2026, the country recorded 21.33 million border entries and exit checks involving international visitors. Among the growing array of destinations in the vast country, China’s villages have emerged as a compelling draw. To explore these gems, CGTN presents Village Voyage, a series following American host Julian Waghann and Namibian traveler Absalom Absalom through villages in Guangdong Province, located in the Pearl River Delta, north of Hong Kong. For Absalom, the journey offers what he sees as a replicable model of how villages can thrive without losing their “souls.”

IMG 8135

Ancestral halls and the scholars who never left

In Shunde’s Yang’e Village in southern Guangdong Province, Julian and Absalom step into the cultural space of a community – once the Lu Ancestral Hall, where scholar Lu Cang founded an academy after retiring from office. It is a small village but home to 14 civil and military jinshi scholars during the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties, a reflection of its long-held reverence for education. A jinshi was the highest and most prestigious rank in China’s imperial civil service examination system – a scholar who passed the final court-administered exam. But the village’s living heritage does not stop at books. Here, the lion dance – an intangible cultural heritage item – passes down from old masters to children. “If they want to learn, we just provide the opportunity for the kids,” said lion dance coach Feng Jianhua. “So, they can carry forward our millennia-old culture.”

The village that gave the world kung fu

Few know Bruce Lee’s ancestral home stands in Jun’an, Shunde. Guangdong has long been the heartland of southern Chinese martial arts. Locals greet each other not with “Have you eaten?” but “Have you had your night porridge?” – a phrase that means “Have you been practicing kung fu?”

Luo Dezhi, a fifth-generation inheritor of Shaolin Wing Chun and Bruce Lee’s fellow disciple, has trained for over 50 years. “For a martial artist, virtue comes first, then a strong body,” he said. “Kung fu represents traditional Chinese culture – to strengthen the body, protect oneself, and help others.”

Soft gold from village waterways

A century ago, merchant He Mingshi shipped xiangyunsha – gambiered Canton gauze, known as “soft gold” – from Shunde’s villages down the Pearl River Delta to countries abroad, like Malaysia.

The saying goes: “A tael of gold for a tael of silk.” Today, this UNESCO-recognized intangible cultural heritage is still made by hand. “It’s way harder than it looks,” Absalom said as he tried the process. Inheritor Chen Hongfa watched and smiled. From Shunde, Guangdong, the craft reaches the world.

UNESCO gastronomy inside towns

Shunde is one of only a handful of UNESCO Cities of Gastronomy worldwide. Within Guangdong – a province famous for Cantonese cuisine – Shunde is widely regarded as its birthplace. “About ten years ago, they converted this place into a food street,” a fish skin vendor said. Now, visitors come for crispy African crucian carp skin, fried milk (a recipe unchanged since 2002), and Shunde raw fish slices. “This is the best choice I’ve made this year so far,” Absalom said. “I would never imagine tasting this in a village.”

More than a series – a travel companion

Village Voyage is more than a television feature. It is a living travel guide – a “road book” that maps Shunde’s hidden gems through detailed itineraries, rich photo essays, and short-form videos. The series expands beyond the screen with guest vlogs and first-person POV footage, placing viewers directly into the boat, the kung fu training hall, and the bustling food street. For armchair travelers and policymakers alike, it offers an immersive, replicable vision of rural development. Whether you seek cultural roots, martial arts legacy, merchant wisdom, or the simple warmth of a village meal, this series delivers it all, through the quiet rituals of daily life: a bowl of porridge, a punch practiced at dawn, a piece of silk dried in sunlight.

An open, confident rural China is not a relic. It is a flight or train ride away.

Odisha has secured a proposed $3.3 billion semiconductor substrate project involving Intel Corporation and 3D Glass Solutions Inc., marking one of the largest high-technology manufacturing commitments tied to India’s chipmaking ambitions.

The memorandum of understanding, signed by the Government of Odisha, Intel and 3DGS, covers an advanced packaging glass-core substrate manufacturing facility in the Bhubaneswar-Khurda region. The project is expected to focus on substrates used in next-generation chip packaging, a part of the semiconductor supply chain that has gained strategic importance as artificial intelligence, high-performance computing and advanced data-centre processors demand larger, faster and more power-efficient packages.

The agreement places Odisha in a stronger position within India’s semiconductor map, which has so far been led by assembly, testing, marking and packaging projects, outsourced semiconductor assembly facilities, compound semiconductor proposals and early-stage fabrication investments. The planned plant would add a specialised layer to that ecosystem by targeting glass-core substrates and high-density interconnect technologies, areas that are increasingly viewed as critical for advanced packaging.

Intel’s role is expected to centre on technology know-how, process expertise and ecosystem support, while 3DGS brings specialisation in glass-based integration platforms. 3DGS, a US-based company, has developed glass-centric technologies for radio-frequency, photonics and semiconductor packaging applications. Its involvement gives the Odisha plan a sharper focus than conventional electronics manufacturing projects, as glass-core substrates remain an emerging technology rather than a mature commodity segment.

Glass substrates are attracting industry attention because conventional organic substrates face physical limits as chip packages become larger and denser. Advanced processors now often combine multiple chiplets, memory stacks and interconnect layers in one package. That increases pressure on the base material to carry more power and data connections while reducing warpage, signal loss and thermal stress. Glass offers better dimensional stability, finer interconnect potential and the ability to support larger package sizes, though yield, tooling and commercial-scale production remain challenges.

Intel has publicly positioned glass substrates as a key packaging technology for the second half of this decade. The company has argued that glass could help extend system-level performance gains beyond the limits of transistor scaling, particularly for artificial intelligence accelerators and high-performance computing chips. For India, participation in this segment could move the country beyond back-end assembly into a more advanced part of the global chip supply chain.

The Odisha project is also politically significant. The signing was witnessed by Union electronics and information technology minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Odisha chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi, alongside senior executives from Intel and 3DGS. The state has been pushing to attract electronics, data centre and semiconductor-linked investments as part of a broader industrial strategy aimed at diversifying beyond metals, mining and ports.

The proposed facility is expected to be developed over several years, with industry estimates placing the build-out period at five to six years. Employment projections point to high-skilled roles across engineering, materials science, process control, quality systems and equipment maintenance, while indirect jobs could emerge through chemicals, gases, logistics, clean-room services and precision component suppliers.

The investment comes as India seeks to reduce dependence on overseas semiconductor supply chains after pandemic-era shortages exposed vulnerabilities in electronics, automotive and defence manufacturing. The Union government’s semiconductor programme has already backed projects by Tata Electronics, Micron Technology, CG Power and Kaynes, while several states are competing to attract design, packaging and manufacturing facilities. Gujarat and Assam have emerged as early beneficiaries, while Odisha’s Intel-3DGS agreement signals a broader geographic spread of the chip ecosystem.

For Intel, the deal fits into a wider effort to strengthen its foundry and advanced packaging credentials at a time when the global chip industry is being reshaped by artificial intelligence demand. The company has been investing in packaging platforms such as EMIB and Foveros, while also promoting glass substrates as a future enabling technology. Its broader turnaround remains under scrutiny because of competitive pressure from Nvidia, AMD, TSMC and Samsung, but advanced packaging offers a route to relevance in custom accelerators and multi-die systems.

The project will still have to pass execution tests before it becomes a production anchor. Semiconductor substrate manufacturing requires tight process control, specialised equipment, stable utilities, skilled technical labour and reliable supply of materials. Glass-core technology also needs commercial validation at scale, as the industry has not yet shifted from established organic substrate supply chains in volume applications.

Solar physicists have identified a hidden change inside the Sun that could force a reassessment of how space-weather models track the solar cycle, after helioseismology data showed magnetic activity becoming progressively more confined near the visible surface. A long-running study using the Birmingham Solar-Oscillations Network found that the Sun’s internal acoustic waves have been carrying signals that diverge from standard surface measures, including sunspot counts and 10.7-centimetre […]
